Doubts grow over future of Churchgate Hotel

Communities / Wed 10th Sep 2014 at 12:48pm

WE say confusion but a YH reporter rang the Churchgate Hotel on Wednesday afternoon and asked if they were closing.

The receptionist said: “Yes, we are. On September 18th. So, we are not taking any bookings.”

For a week now, there has been strong rumours that the hotel is set to close with the possible loss of a number of jobs.

YH spoke a press spokesperson for Swallow Hotels. They said: “We have no knowledge that it is closing.”

However, matters have moved on since then. A spokesman for Deloitte on behalf of Swallow Hotels said: “As contract negotiations are ongoing, we are not in a position to comment on any potential closure.

“In the event that hotel does close, all monies paid in relation to any existing bookings will be refunded.”

The Churchgate Hotel has been part of Harlow’s history for many years. Hundreds if not thousands of couples got married there.

Last weekend, Harlow Conservative councillor, Simon Carter celebrated his fortieth wedding anniversary at hotel.

Old Harlow councillor, Joel Charles has told YH. “I am very concerned about this situation and will be keeping tabs, especially with respect to any jobs implications.

I hadn't realised my anniversary was so news worthy! I did find the rooms a little tatty at the edges but the food and the staff were excellent and i would recommend it - but seems a little late now.
