Dance ReloadedBy Siobhan Wood

DANCE students at Harlow College performed their self-choreographed Reloaded Dance Show to an audience in the Glass Box Theatre to mark the end of term.

The Level 3 students will be assessed on this event, which had the theme of a variety show.

The students had to take an element of Swan Lake and choreograph in jazz and commercial dance styles.

Student Clarice Ridley, 18, of Thaxted, said: “It took me outside my comfort zone trying to create something that was fitting for the show and also showed my style and I was really pleased with the outcome.”

All but one of the dances were choreographed by the students themselves.

Senior Tutor at the College, Lorraine Hodges, said: “We teach them the background, we give them ballet, tap and jazz classes, but then when it comes to their exams at the end of the year their performances allow them to show what they can actually do.

“This opportunity makes them the people they are when they leave.”

The students also choose who would be appearing in their dances and organised their costumes, music and lighting.

Student Chloe Ewing, 17, of Harlow, said: “We’re treated as professionals already.

“It’s proper training for what we all want to do and it does prepare you for what the industry is going to be like.”

The show was open to the public and many of Harlow College’s past Dance students were in the audience.

Student Emma Barker, 17, of Harlow, said: “You spend so much time working on something in the studio that to actually put it on stage gives you a really good feeling before and after you perform.”

The Principal of Harlow College, Karen Spencer, said: “I’m always blown away by the talent of our dance students – today was no exception.

“The choreography and choice of music was inspirational – it’s always fantastic to see students showcase their talent.”
