AS part of National Apprenticeship Week (9-13 March), which celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy; Suzy Stride, prospective MP for Harlow, has praised Harlow College.

The college runs an array of apprenticeship schemes, from Bricklaying to Hairdressing, aiming to instill knowledge and skills while students gain a qualification and earn money at the same time.

Harlow College’s Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles course engages and motivates students in the motor industry, combining practical based investigation of the motor vehicle and its sub-systems alongside the use of dedicated computer software for the delivery of theoretical knowledge.

Apprenticeships have become increasingly popular in the UK with places available in over 170 industries. They have also proven successful, with 90% of apprentices staying in employment after finishing their course, includes 2% self-employed.

Suzy Stride recognises the importance of apprenticeships through her work in a charity that runs an array of projects for young people, including women’s projects, youth training, a youth centre and a social enterprise hub. She is also involved in an Apprenticeship scheme designed to teach employability, develop functional skills and ultimately gain a vocational qualification.

Suzy Stride, Labour’s candidate for MP, said: “Through my work with young people, I have seen first-hand the importance of apprenticeships, which act as a bridge between the training environment and the working world, opening doors of opportunity for employability. It is great to see, in the heart of Harlow, a college dedicated to this work, really making Harlow the hub of apprenticeships. Harlow College offer varied and exciting opportunities to learn, gain skills and enter the competitive world of work through apprenticeships. They should be applauded.”
