Athletics: Harlow athletes shine at Essex X-Country Champs

HARLOW Athletic Club had 26 young athletes take part in the Essex Primary Schools Cross Country Championships at a very wet and windy Southend.

The athletes had qualified through the West Essex Schools Championships, organised by Church Langley School deputy headteacher David Stacey and held at Paringdon Sports Club.

Pride of place at Southend last Thursday went to Year 3 HAC’s Jemima Pratt, who won the 900m race beating around 140 other runners to be crowned Essex Primary Schools county champion.

She was followed by Harlow club-mates Lilly Smith (37th); Millie Carter (39th) and Sophie Brennan (65th).

In the Year 4 girls’ race, HAC’s Elizabeth Woods won a brilliant bronze medal. She was followed by club-mates Larna Morgan (18th), Madeleine Bailey (21st), Alicia Bovelle (39th) and Sadie Collier (73rd).

In the Year 4 boys’ race over 900m, HAC’s Frankie Edwards was pipped for the bronze as he came fourth. Thomas Smith was 26th, Jack Rushworth 34th, Ben Savidge 36th and Rafferty Groat 49th.

Other HAC results:- Year 5 girls’ one-mile race: Ellie Callaghan 20th; Sian Kearney 70th; Ava Quill 85th.

Year 5 boys’ one-mile race: Darryn Gerty 29th; William Smith 121st.

Year 6 girls’ one-mile race: Mackenzie Cranfield 17th; Ellen Savidge 36th; Katie Brennan 45th; Chloe Reynolds 77th.

Year 6 boys one-mile race: Alfie Collier 24th; Oliver Carter 63rd; Henry Quill 71st.

Gina Bailey, HAC chairman and Henry Moore teacher said: “It was great to see our U11 contingent representing their Harlow schools at these championships.

“It was lovely to see so many of them wearing their green HAC tracksuits and I’d like to say thanks to the team at Create Identitee in Harlow for designing such a fantastic kit for us.”
