Lady Kao visits University Technical College

Lady Gwen Kao graduated from London University in 1955 and married Sir Charles Kao in 1959 prior to them both joining STL in 1960. Lady Kao was equally part of the discovery of fibre optics, writing many of the Fortran Software Programs used on the project. She is now Sir Charles’ care-giver, after his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in 2002 and dedicates her time to raising awareness and funds through the Charles Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s disease.
Deputy Principal Gareth Williams also led Lady Kao to view the blue plaque dedicated to Sir Charles in the Water Gardens and the mural on the side of The Playhouse.The visit took place prior to a talk Lady Kao delivered at Café Scientifique in Bishops Stortford.
Lady Kao expressed high regard for the UTC and its facilities. Principal Michael McKeaveney said:
“It was an honour to welcome Lady Kao to Sir Charles Kao UTC. I am pleased she enjoyed her visit and meeting our hard-working students and I would like to thank her for her kind donation of a signed memoir from Sir Charles”
