JOURNALISM students from Harlow College were given a VIP tour of BBC Essex’s radio station in Chemlsford last Wednesday afternoon.

The students, who are currently completing their NCTJ Diploma at the college, were guided round the studios and newsroom by Nick Alliker.

Alliker, one of the station’s newsreaders and reporters, gave the students an insightful look into the work which is required when working in the radio business.

Students also got the chance to speak to journalists who work for News Online, the BBC’s news site.

Here, they learnt what impact social media has had on the reporting world as well as the importance of fact checking and having credible sources.

The students were fascinated by the journey of a short local news article, noting with keen interest what makes a story local, topical and applicable.
