HARLOW faced Stevenage in the first round of the Senior Vase with a number of regular 1st XV players missing, mainly througn injuries. This was not all bad news it allowed five players from the Rams, Harlow 2nd Team to move up and gain first team experience. Andy Quinn, James Clark, Alfie Clark, Ashley Westall and Jack Almond responded to the challenge. They all played very well indeed, putting down markers for future 1st team opportunities and Ashley and Alfie got onto the score sheet.

From a game point of view although Harlow played well and held the lead for almost all of the match it was a big disappointment when Stevenage slotted a penalty with the final kick of the match to win by 22 points to 20.

After some initial pressure from Stevenage Ashley Westall btoke away to score for Harlow giving them a 5 point lead. Minutes later Alfie Clark broke clear and outpaced the defence to add a second try. Throughout the first half Harlow’s pack were dominanat and a try by Josh Drake from a rolling maul gave them a 15 – 0 lead at the interval.

In the second half play was more balanced but Harlow looked as if they would hold onto their lead. Then in a space of three minutes the whole scene changed. Issed tackles allowed the visitors to break free and score a converted try. Immediately from the restart the Stevenage No.6 sprinted 50 metres to score a second cutting the Harlow lead to 15 – 14. Going into the final quarter another stevenage try briefly put htem ahead. Harlow pack responded and drove over the line for Josh Drake to add his second try to give Harlow a 20 – 19 lead. It looked as if they would hold on but hten they conceded a penalty which Stevenage slotted with what rurned out to be the last kick of the match giving them the win by 20 – 22.
