STAFF and pupils at Saint Nicholas School in Old Harlow are celebrating this week after receiving the top rating in a recent school inspection, carried out by the Independent School Inspectorate (ISI).

The result of the inspection which was carried out on the 6th and 7th December last year, has been formally shared with the school and the full report has happily been shared with parents and staff who are all delighted with the result.

Unlike previous inspections, where inspectors are permitted to use words such as ‘exceptional’ or ‘outstanding’, the highest possible rating under this particular inspection framework is ‘fully compliant’ which the school is delighted to have achieved.

Across eight discrete areas, covering aspects such as quality of education provided, pupil welfare, health and safety and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils the school was judged to be fully compliant in all areas.

Furthermore, on leaving the school after the two days, the inspectors were keen to stress how much they had enjoyed their time at Saint Nicholas and complimented the pupils who the Headmaster has said were a credit to the school throughout the process.

David Bown, the Headmaster, who has been in post since September 2016, said; “I am enormously grateful to all my colleagues for the consistently high standards they set and to the pupils for the part they played in making this such a successful inspection. I must also thank the, more than, two hundred parents who responded to the questionnaires and whose feedback reinforced the judgements made by the inspectors. It is a fantastic vote of confidence in the school.”

The school, which celebrated an excellent set of GCSE results last summer, appears to be going from strength to strength under Mr Bown’s headship, with a series of improvements to the school’s facilities having recently been undertaken, including an extended 3D art room, a newly laid all weather cricket square, a new remote controlled stage lighting system in the theatre and a complete refurbishment of the main school hall.

2018 will see further facility developments including a new junior play area and the opening of an onsite coffee shop for parents to use after school drop off.

Mr Bown commented, “We are thrilled with the inspection report but we know that we cannot become complacent and are fully committed to driving the school forward to maintain the very highest standards of educational provision. 2018 is set to be a very busy year but we are certainly off to a great start.”
