YOUNGSTERS at a Harlow rugby team will be protected from the elements this winter following funding from UK Power Networks.

The under-7s squad at Harlow RFC have been given a £250 grant from the power company which delivers electricity across the East of England.

Team coach Rob Nagi, who works to keep the lights on for local homes and businesses in Essex as a field engineer, applied for the Team Sports Award.

The money will fund a portable touchline shelter designed to keep spare kit and equipment dry during matches and keep the rain off players not on the field.

Rob said: “As an club we are run by volunteers and funded by sponsorship or any other money raised. We keep membership costs to minimum to ensure the club is accessible to all children from all backgrounds.

“I’m a coach with the under-sevens and the sponsorship from my company will be used for us to fund a waterproof shelter for the children which will house their equipment and keep the rain off at half-time.

“I’ve been with the team more than a year now and we play matches and tournaments across Essex, Hertfordshire and London with an emphasis on enjoyment and promoting exercise.”

The Team Sport Award scheme encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. So far this year over 70 teams have benefitted to a combined sum of more than £18,000.
