Letter to Editor: Little learned from Harlow and Gilston Garden Town

Sir,
So what have I learnt from the two exhibitions so far, having attended on Saturday morning.
1. Nothing will be done to alleviate the already heavily congested traffic using Southern Way, set to get much worse with all the new homes to be built nearby, other than to try and encourage road users to use other routes.
2. What was said by Cllr Purton at one of The Harlow Alliance Party’s public meetings that the town would be having a TRAMWAY (such as those in Nottingham?) is NOT going to happen because the infrastructure needed simply cannot be provided. Electric powered buses will instead become the norm.
3. Thick lines on a map of the area gave no detailed proposals of what will be done to improve traffic flows.
4. The Garden Town developers are not able themselves to provide a bus service, this is subject to bus companies taking up the challenge, and we all know from experience in Harlow what that means.
5. They have not been asked by Harlow Council to take their exhibition to any of the Residents Associations dotted around the town.
6. Publicity about the consultation is relying wholly on social media … who knew this was going on in the Harvey Centre and why only during the day time and not evenings and why not at other locations around the town?
7. No-one I heard speak whilst I was there had a good word to say about these vague proposals.
I am afraid that this is another feeble attempt (just a tick in a box) to consult with residents, one which both Harlow and Essex Councillors should be ashamed of.
Kind regards
Nicholas Taylor
The Harlow Alliance Party
