Letter to Editor: When will our churches re-open?

Covid-19 / Mon 1st Jun 2020 at 07:19am

Dear Editor,

We have just celebrated Pentecost 2020 and despite the present circumstances, Harlow celebrated the gifts of the Holy Spirit prayerfully, creatively and joyfully, in a way that opens up those gifts to all who wish to receive them.

However, we wish we could do more through our buildings, in terms of preparation, prayer and praise. To that end I have sent the following letter to Robert Halfon MP:

Dear Robert,

THE Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Revd Dr John Inge, has said “ The risk to a person sitting quietly to pray in a church which is properly cleaned and supervised is surely not greater than a trip to the supermarket? The benefits to that person and countless others will be much greater, though. I wonder why churches not being allowed to open?”

As Chair of the Heart 4 Harlow Civic group I believe this view would be echoed throughout church communities in Harlow and the villages. As such, I hope and pray, that a gradual and safe easing of restrictions on our churches will be forthcoming soon.

Please can I ask you to make representations to this effect?

Yours sincerely

Ian Beckett
