Harlow ice-skater pleads to PM Boris Johnson: “Just let me back on the ice”

Burnt Mill Academy / Mon 10th Aug 2020 at 07:50am

BURNT Mill Academy student, Tallulah Bowers, has been ice-skating for seven years. The Roydon thirteen-year-old has been making her way up the British rankings.

All those long hours of training were going so well until Covid-19 came. Five months later and Tallulah seems to be no closer in being allowed back on the ice.

YH went to Roydon to speak to Tallulah and her coach Danni Hunt-Goldie about the last five months, how she has coped and what their message is to the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

The ice-skating community is very frustrated. When the PM announced that ice-rinks would remain closed, British Ice Skating issued the following statement: “The announcement by the Prime Minister has disappointed not only British Ice Skating, but all those that were due to reopen this weekend, as he declared the reopening of Ice Rinks has been postponed from August 1 to at least August 15.

“British Ice Skating have been in contact with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) who have confirmed this to be the case.

“DCMS have reviewed and approved the Return to Rinks document published in conjunction with partners from across the ice sport sector.

The British Ice Skating statement added: “British Ice Skating share our members frustrations regarding the recent announcement and want to reassure you that extensive work is being conducted behind the scenes by British Ice Skating, Ice Rink Managers Association (IRMA), NGB’s and various other sporting partners to review how the sector proceeds given this decision.”

Finally, here is a film, made by Tallulah’s team, of her talent on the ice.
