Harlow Labour accuses Conservative Councillor Russell Perrin of being “a small town Donald Trump.”

Dear Sir,

In a disgraceful bid to incite tension and division, Conservative Councillor Russell Perrin attempted to mislead the Council and Harlow residents last night by claiming he could deliver a balanced budget without raising Council Tax.

Councillor Perrin claimed he had agreement from senior Council finance officers that his plans were sustainable, even though under direct questioning from me, those same officers admitted that they had warned Councillor Perrin that his plans were unsustainable beyond three years and they would lead to a £500,000 shortfall by 2024/25. This would create a financial gap the Council would not be able to meet without making serious cuts affecting services and costing jobs.

Harlow’s elected Councillors saw through Councillor Perrin’s reckless attempt to mislead and voted down his alternative budget. However, refusing to accept this legitimate democratic outcome, in a Trump style move, Councillor Perrin immediately persisted with his lie. He launched a petition claiming his alternative budget had been judged as sustainable by financial experts, the exact opposite of the advice he was given.

At a time of unprecedented crisis, people need to be coming together for the common good. Councillor Perrin’s inflammatory petition based on a discredited alternative budget is shameful and he should be made to resign from his post as the Finance and Resources spokesperson for Harlow Conservatives.

While I absolutely accept the legitimate democratic role of robust scrutiny from the opposition, I utterly reject the distortion of facts for the manipulation of public opinion.

I find this shameful that a labour council can increase services yet again when most of us have used very little over this last year. I would also like to point out that over the last 10 years my council tax has increased by over 200% how is that exceptable under a labour council
