Comment: Harlow’s anti vaxxers and the Nuremberg Code

SINCE March 2020, YourHarlow (YH) has published over 1300 stories on Covid-19.
From the very beginning, our editorial line has been that we report the facts.
Our editor appeared on BBC Look East in March 2020 when William Martin school on Tawneys Road had shut down for a deep clean (seems like a long time ago)
He made his feelings clear then about expressing an opinion on Covid-19.
He said: “When I went up to university in 1981, I studied History. The medicine department was next corridor down. I never went down there then and I don’t plan to go down there (metaphorically) now.
Ask his opinion on the 1832 Reform Act, the Easter Uprising of 1916 or Pre-Raphaelite painting and I think I can hold my own (yes I know, full grant and this is all you got for it!).
But when it comes to anything scientific, I leave you with my O Level Physics result in 1978: Unclassified….”
I can tell you that on January 9th, there were 1327 cases of Covid-19 in Harlow, 204 people in Princess Alexandra Hospital across ten wards.
I can tell you that, at the moment, there are 214 cases of Covid-19 in Harlow, 14 people in Princess Alexandra Hospital across one ward.
There isn’t any analysis because frankly, I would be out of my depth.
Do my research? I hear some say…Listen, the answers to the questions in my O Level Physics were at the back of the book, I didn’t understand the questions and I didn’t understand the answer.
A little light has come on in my car. I have done my research and it says “Take it to the garage”
And very soon, I will file my tax returns with my accountant.
You get the picture.
And so, over 1200 stories, we have kept an eye on the anti-vaxxers. We have been reluctant to give them the oxygen of publicity.
However, journalism is the first draft of history.
In many years to come, people may look back on the history of Covid-19 and ask “Were there any anti vaxxers in Harlow” Because if there was. it was hardly recorded by the local newspaper.
Out of 1300 stories we have run, we have published (I believe) just three. A story centred on a letter sent out by the head of Churchgate Primary (see above); a story regarding anti-vaxxers handing out leaflets near schools and outside the Harlow Leisurezone vaccination centre and today’s story on letters being handed in at receptions warning schools that they may face legal action.
With reference to the letter handed in to receptions.
We have seen a copy of the letter and it appears to refer to the Nuremberg Code.
What is the Nuremberg Code?
The Nuremberg Code is a set of ethical research principles, developed in the wake of Nazi atrocities—specifically the inhumane and often fatal experimentation on human subjects without consent—during World War Two.
Many people heard reference to Nuremberg by anti-vcxx campaigner (and struck off nurse) Kate Shemirani.
On 24 July 2021, Shemirani attended a protest at Trafalgar Square, London, and made threats to NHS doctors and nurses by comparing them to the doctors and nurses of Nazi Germany who were convicted at the Nuremberg Trials and hanged.
She said, “Get their names. Email them to me. With a group of lawyers, we are collecting all that. At the Nuremburg Trials the doctors and nurses stood trial and they hung. If you are a doctor or a nurse, now is the time to get off that bus… and stand with us the people.”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, described her words as “utterly appalling” and reported her to the police.
What concerns us is try number of people who have endorsed this letter being sent to the schools and in particular its reference to the Nuremberg Code. I interpret it that they don’t see the teaching staff at the Harlow schools as any different from those tried and executed following their trial at Nuremberg.
Dr Julian Sheather of the British Medical Association said:

So there we are. I could write a lot more but I have a newspaper to run. I think this might have all started with meeting the Moonies in 1978.
But on a serious note……
If there is one thing that disturbs me, is that on too many occasions, I have observed people start to talk about vaccines and then Bill Gates and microchips and then global elites and then, before you know it, they are talking about..Jewish people.
And yes, for all this educashun (sic), I am aware of the Persian proverb that says: “Doubt is the key to knowledge” and am aware that people have the right to be sceptical. Some people are just trying to make sense of a complex and frightening pandemic,
All I can do is keep the people of Harlow informed regarding Covid-19.
In Harlow, the numbers are coming down and the key message seems to be about personal responsibility. For some people’s mental health, it means just moving on now. That is why, we try and not saturate the site with stories however for others they feel this is far from over.
Either way, we will let you know.
