Stewards Academy students work with highly acclaimed poet

Education: Secondary / Wed 9th Mar 2022 pm31 04:14pm

ON Tuesday 1st March, pupils at Stewards Academy had a special visit from poet and journalist, Michelle Madsen, who tutored them in developing their poetry and performance skills. Through a series of workshops, pupils learnt how to consolidate and develop their poetry ideas and develop their understanding of metaphor and imagery within their work. Pupils also developed their understanding of the connection between words and movement through a series of drama related activities. This culminated in an end of day poetry ‘slam’ in which the pupils performed their poems.

Mr Springthorpe stated: ‘The pupils were absolutely fantastic and learnt a great deal about bringing poetry to life as well as developing their performance skills. It was a delight to see all pupils develop their writing skills, confidence and perform their work in the end of day ‘poetry slam.’

Michelle Madsen said: ‘The day was an absolute pleasure, what a wonderful group of writers to work with – I was really impressed with their focus, creativity, kindness, and openness; it is a good place – alive and honest. I wish you all the absolute best with all your writing and creative adventures.’

Pupils shall be sharing their work via the Stewards Academy Open Poetry competition and national writing schemes and competitions.

On World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March pupils and staff also had the opportunity to present their favourite books in the library and within lessons. Mr. Springthorpe said, ‘It was lovely to see pupils and staff discussing and presenting their favourite books to each other and discussing in lessons. Some pupils had gone to great efforts in making some wonderful displays. It was lovely to hear them discussing reading and what they enjoyed about their books.’
