Election 2022: Church Langley Conservative is passionate about her ward and her town

Elections / Fri 15th Apr 2022 at 09:51am

IT has been an incredibly busy year for new Church Langley councillor, Nicky Purse.

Nicky became a councillor after years as a community champion in her ward.

Since she won the seat in a by-election (hence why she is defending it after just one year), she has been very busy, especially as Cllr Purse is the portfolio holder for the environment.

In fact as YH was driving to this interview, we passed by cllr Purse as she was having a meeting with the Potter Street Fayre organisers up on Harlow Common.

Outstanding in her own field? We will let the voters decide

We spoke to cllr Purse about the past year, the challenges ahead and her Prime Minister.

We do plan to interview all the candidates in her ward.

Church Langley

Nicola Purse (Conservative)

Ed Ray (Labour)

Bengeman White (Green)

Cllr Purse is an excellent councillor both for her ward and the town as a whole and has really worked hard to improve our neglected environment. She is making a difference. I hope she is re-elected. We need more determined women councillors like her.

Such a shame but I think you and fellow Conservative councillors will suffer at the local elections because their MP’s haven’t the guts to call for the PM’s resignation. How else do constituents express their anger ?

Barry, these elections are about local issues, not national. If we believe we have a decent Council, National issues should not come into the equation; that is for a General Election.

Ah the same Nicky Purse who voted for the Stort crossing and is the portfolio holder for the enviroment.

Jarrett, you need to check your facts and history. The HGGT project was adopted by the previous Labour administration in 2017 and voted on by them no less than 7 times since (all on the record if you care to check). Furthermore, it had a complete chapter on it in their Harlow Development Plan adopted as a material consideration in December 2020. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

For the record just to confirm 2 Labour councillors voted against the planning application but the application was supported by the Tory members. Spin all you like but the truth is the truth.

Mr Durcan, thank you for confirming my point regarding the rank hypocrisy of Harlow Labour, ardently supporting ( indeed founder members of the HGGT project) since 2017 and then voting against to play to the gallery. A truly deceitful and pathetic display. You and your Momentum buddies fool nobody. Incidentally, one of your more honourable members abstained from the vote claiming in public that it would be wholly inconsistent to vote against a project his own Labour Party had initiated and supported. That you cannot deny, soon to be ex Councillor Durcan.

No fan of Labour of course Marie, but there is nothing wrong with changing your mind. The Labour Councillors heard the debate and the objections made by 6000 people who signed a petition against the Planning Application and decided to vote against the proposal. I have to say I had never walked along that part of the river until a few months ago, I was amazed to hear how tranquil it is along there and saw many people walking along the river. The simple fact is, the Tory Party receive a very substantial part of its donations from property developers and house builders and will always side where there is a profit to be made. Conservative Councillors and MP's across the South East of England are throwing out or doubt on their Local Plans, it is a shame that those involved in HGGT are not doing the same.

Tony, do you not think it is a little hypocritical for the Labour councillors to vote against the Stort Crossings when it was they, and their colleagues, who were responsible for the project, voting it through on no less than seven occasions and including it within the Local Plan?

Michael I know this is silly season but if you really wanted to change the decision you could have put a motion to full council.you had the numbers to amend the council position . You didn’t ,so stop the blame game and take ownership .I proud that the two Labour councillors were open and honest about their views. This shows Labour is a broad church of views and opinions.

I won’t reply to the pathetic insults from the MPs spin Doctor. It a real surprise that Robert supports such activity.shame on him. I know he’s annoyed as we have called out the Tory lies about PAH and Occasio House. Perhaps he needs to look at his team first.

It was labour's plan to build over the river stort, and wetlands. It was conservatives who allowed it to go through, they could of stopped this monstrosity, conservatives have done nothing more than pass the buck, to Labour, But it was the blues who let it go through, there could of stopped this monstrosity. 6,000 signatures against the vandalism of the river. At consultation s you weren't allowed to speak of river, but speak of it I did. Meetings cancelled, next meeting was heard but only really by them. They didn't really want to here us. And on there posts, comments get took down. Questions not answered No replies. So yes Maria, it was labour's plans. But this lot let it all go a head. And God knows there's plenty that didn't want it to succeed. Is this listening to public options, no of course its not, how ever you dress this up. There leveling up to line there own pockets, 99 council houses, I asked how many in fase 2 an 3, no replies. 5000 people waiting for homes in this town, is this thinking of Harlow people, no of course it isn't. There telling you, conservatives are building hundreds and hundreds, of council houses, if that s the case why are they not answering this question. I think not may be.

I don't want to hijack this article, I genuinely think that Nicky is a principled person who wants to do good for this town, however Marie and Mike Hardwares comments are laughable and attempt to insult our intelligence as they know full well and I'm sure that Nicky Purse will confirm; that the Planning management committee are supposed to sit in a near Judicial role.. Had the Labour councilors acted as Marie or Mike H suggested, that would have reaked of Predetermination. However the tories voted as a bloc, both in Harlow and East Herts.. Furthermore the fact that cllr Hardware offers his crocodile tears whilst being a Director of Chelgate who have acted for hggt is deplorable.. There is something rotten going on in this town and we need to stand against it.

I think the way the two main parties have behaved with regard to the Stort crossing is deplorable. I am a traditional Labour supporter but feel very let down. Neither of the main parties has any credibility on this important local matter. I shall be voting for the Green Party, who have genuine credentials regarding the environment. I hope other voters disillusioned with the current state of affairs consider the Green Party.

Penny, I agree I will be voting green. Think people have had enough of this build build build, and it doesn't matter at what cost to environment. Conservatives have lost a lot of votes, over this river stort. They never wanted to hear us. They never wanted to meet with us. And all councils pushed it under carpet. I say to theses councils never ,never underestimate the power of people s voices. You will reap what you sow.

Anti social behaviour is best addressed by expanding and improving youth and community provision, youth clubs, sports and improved social access to existing, (and creating new) community provision. Our local Church Langley and East Harlow Community, Sports and Youth charity, all crewed by volunteers, needs the funding that was donated over 20 years ago to improve it's provision, to be released, but it, and other donated funds, are still held by the Council. Hopefully now Nicky has identified the problems with antisocial behaviour the Cllrs will strongly support new opportunities to access Council Partnership fund and the substantial Lottery funding being offered to make the significant improvements we need here to meet the challenges thrown up by the expanding population of youngsters in the area.
