Harlow is 75: Life behind the Iron Curtain: Interview with Oana Stefanescu

WE have interviewed local residents from across eastern Europe and so it was a pleasure to interview Oana Stefanescu about growing up in Romania.
We have tended to shy away from politics in our interviews as this is a history project but many of the interviews have reference to politics. For example, Oana’s school had a picture of the country’s leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu in her classroom. And then after 1989, the photos, like the Iron Curtain, came down.
But on a lighter note, we spoke to Oana about life, culture and growing up in Romania.
To mark the town’s 75th anniversary, Harlow Council and Your Harlow have launched a project which records the diverse history, heritage, and culture of the people and groups which are part of modern-day Harlow.
The Harlow at 75 project is made up of audio-visual recordings of conversations with both individuals and groups that explores their lives abroad before resettling in Harlow. The project reflects that we are a local but global new town and explores themes such as the definition of “Home”.
