ON Sunday 29 January the Civic Centre hosted a Holocaust Memorial service, following Holocaust Memorial Day on Friday 27 January.
Holocaust Memorial Day, which falls on 27 January each year, comemmorates all those who were murdered in, and were affected by, the Holocaust and other acts of genocide.
This year’s theme was ‘Ordinary People‘ and encouraged all people to think about the fact that genocide not only affects, but is perpetrated by, ordinary people.
The service at the Civic Centre featured readings from Rabbi Irit Shillor, Reverend Martin Harris, the Chair of Harlow Council, Councillor Andrew Johnson, and other members of the Harlow community. There were also performances from local performing arts group Razed Roof.
In addition to the service, the Civic Centre was lit up in purple from Thursday evening and over the weekend to mark HMD. There is also a special display in the Gibberd Gallery, which features 75 flames created by local schoolchildren, illustrations from the book Irina by Barbara Yelin, and quotes from the ordinary people affected by genocide.
The display will remain in the gallery until Monday 6 February.
