Rugby: Harlow do the double over league leaders Eton Manor
Rugby / Thu 14th Dec 2023 at 09:29am
FOLLOWING a number of tough defeats to Southend and Thurrock, Harlow began the second half of their league campaign with a wonderful, gutsy display to perform the double over table toppers Eton Manor.
They overcame the atrocious conditions to match the opposition’s strong defence to score a converted try in each half against Eton Manor’s two unconverted tries and a penalty.
Despite not securing the scrum dominance, which has become a strength, the lineout work and rolling maul dominance more than compensated.
The first half try scored by winger Adam Nnochiri was initiated by a deftly lobbed kick over the opposition’s defence by Ben Creasey and converted by Liam Batty.
Great defence by the home team allowed them to keep their narrow half time lead at 7-0.
Eton Manor made good use of the wind and despite not converting their two tries they kicked a penalty to go into the lead 7-13.
With the wind heavily in the opposition’s favour it took guts, determination and a great defensive display from Harlow to secure a trademark try from scrum-half Ben Creasey converted by Liam Batty to put Harlow into the lead 14-13.
There followed a tense final 10 minutes with the home side keeping the ball in a series of phases before conceding a penalty which allowed Eton Manor to secure a 5m lineout.
A nail- biting time for the vast Christmas crowd but Harlow’s forwards managed to turn over the ball and get a penalty which allowed them to finish the game 14-13 winners. A wonderful 100% team performance with all 18 giving one of their best performances of this season so far.
Harlow finish the year with a trip to Saffron Walden on Dec 16th. where a win would give them an enviable 9 from 12 win success rate.
