THE winners all know that by playing they’re supporting charities too. And right on their doorstep, the Harlow based Michael Roberts Charitable Trust (MRCT) has been awarded £50,000 raised by Postcode Lottery players, with funding awarded through Postcode Places Trust.
Founded in 1997, the charity aims to help vulnerable people develop their potential and self-confidence, and supports those struggling financially to break the cycle of poverty.
The charity also operates the Harlow Foodbank as well as the Bounty Club, which puts fresh food on the table at a reduced cost for those in financial hardship. Both services help over 6,000 families every year and save 300 tonnes of food from going into landfill.
Andy Thornton, Chief Executive Officer at Michael Roberts Charitable Trust, said: “We are overjoyed by the funding awarded to us by Postcode Places Trust.
“This support will enable us to start a new outreach service – allowing us to visit those who are most isolated and may not be able to come into town to get help or food.
It means a lot to be able to expand on what we do and make those struggling feel supported.”
He added: “The Michael Roberts Charitable Trust is named after Michael, who was born with Down’s Syndrome and a heart of gold. He was an inspiration to the community, barely being able to speak but so kind and loving to everyone.”
Other local charities to receive funding because of Saturday’s Millionaire Street prize include:
Mind West Essex – £75,000
Mental Health Charity across the West Essex region, based in Harlow. They provide activities and support to help people’s different needs and reduce mental distress.
Safer Places – £75,000
A domestic abuse support charity, providing accommodation and therapy services with a mission to drive down the rate and impact of domestic and sexual abuse.
Ideas Plus (Employ-ability) – £50,000

All funding was awarded by Postcode Places Trust.
How it works
People’s Postcode Lottery costs £12 a month to play and there are guaranteed winners every day. People play with their chosen postcode and are automatically entered into all draws. A minimum of 33% from each ticket goes to charity.
Every Saturday, £1 million will be shared by one postcode as part of the lottery’s Millionaire Street prize.
Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised more than £1.2 billion for thousands of charities and local good causes.
This prize was promoted on behalf of Postcode Planet Trust which supports organisations including African Parks, The Wildlife Trusts and WWF-UK.
This is fantastic news!! Well done to all of the winners & what incredible awards to Harlow charities. What a wonderful christmas for you all!
