FOR those of you who are retired, or semi-retired, and looking for ways to enjoy your retirement years through interest groups, activities and socialising, you may find the answer is on your doorstep.  Do you know about Harlow u3a?  It is a self-help learning and social organisation for “Third Agers” and part of an international body.  The u3a is run by its members, for its members, on a voluntary basis.

Currently, there are 650 Harlow u3a members who look forward to getting together for a range of activities in one or more of its 60 groups, which are wide, varied and facilitated by members. These include: walking, pub lunch, philosophy, history, choir, drawing and painting, keep-fit, knitting and crochet, sewing, book group, family history, creative writing, gardening, digital photography, ukulele, chess, bridge, bird-watching…….  A full list can be found on our website.

We enjoy regular trips and outings organised by our members, Hazel and Barb.  In February, members went to see Tina-the Tina Turner Musical in London.  In March, a coach trip is taking place to Thriplow Daffodil Weekend.  Later in the year, some will be enjoying a planned break at Warners Hotel Gunton Hall.

Monthly General Meetings take place at Paringdon Sports Club, Harlow, where members can meet for a catch up and to listen to one of the interesting guest speakers arranged by our Co-ordinator, Terry.  This year so far, we have heard about life in gaol from a former governor of Chelmsford Prison and received an insight into the life and times of Winston Churchill by author and lecturer Andrew J. Baker.

Membership fees are £16 per year.  Many of the group activities are free, take place in members’ homes and are run by members who are group facilitators.  Other groups require payment to cover costs, for example where a venue is hired or materials need to be supplied.

More information can be found on our website: www.u3asites.org.uk/harlow/welcome or contact our Membership Secretary Chris:  [email protected]

For many retirees, the free time – with no work deadlines, meetings or demands – is welcome and valued but it can also bring a lack of structure and purpose, loneliness or boredom.  Harlow u3a is a means to pursue existing, or new, interests, make new friends and have some fun.  We encourage you to find out more and, hopefully, we’ll hear from you soon.
