Council leaders issue joint statement on purchase of Burnt Mills development

General / Fri 15th Mar 2024 at 12:42pm

STATEMENTS from group leaders on Harlow Council following the announcement of the purchase of the Burnt Mill development.

The Leader of Harlow Council, Cllr Dan Swords (Harlow Conservatives), and the Leader of the Opposition, Cllr Chris Vince (Harlow Labour), have made the following statements following the announcement.

Cllr Dan Swords said: “We have worked extremely hard to buy this private development for the benefit of Harlow residents. I’m sure most people from the town would have read or heard the news that Newham Council were working on a deal to buy this building.

“I said that we would do everything we could to block that deal and we have moved quickly to buy this development instead. This is all about putting the housing needs of Harlow residents first and standing up for our town.

“This is an impressive and modern development, which has been built to a very high standard and is located on a key gateway in and out of Harlow. The original development was always intended for the rental market with just over 9% being affordable housing. We will be increasing the amount of affordable housing to 30% with those homes allocated to Harlow families on our Housing Needs Register with the rest being available for Harlow residents to rent.

“I thank the opposition for supporting this proposition when I brought it to Full Council in January, and sincerely thank the team that has worked so tirelessly on this.”

Cllr Chris Vince said: “The purchase of the Burnt Mills development is good news for Harlow, a good example of councillors of all parties working together ‘in common endeavour’.

“The agreement to purchase this building was unanimously approved by the full council earlier this year, Council officers are to be praised for their excellent work in concluding this deal in a short timeframe.”

It’s good to see common ground and consensus from Chris and Dan. Politics doesn’t have to be so divisive.

Ha ha, we have Dan Swords thanking the opposition but still comments about Chris Vince. I think there may still be questions about the value for money but I am going to say well done guys for cooperating on this. Perhaps there is a lesson there, working together achieves far more

Cross party collaboration is the only time the Labour Group have any sensible ideas. Working together occasionally gives the Labour Group a rare opportunity to feel relevant.

Wayne I think if you're desperate for somewhere to live you'll happily put up with most things.

Chris Vince publicly opposed this deal back in December 2033 - see YH statement by Chris Vince: QUOTE Harlow Labour’s Chris Vince lays blame at Tories door over Newham Council bid to buy 172 flats – News / Wed 20th Dec 2023 . In this statement he goes on to ask: Quote: “My question to Conservative run Harlow Council is what are they going to do to stop this happening in other developments across the town including the Occasio house site? “When Labour were in power instead of trying to agitate other councils ………., we actually negotiated. Sadly that’s the sort of grown up politics his government has been sadly lacking”. So now Council Leader, Dan Swords has pulled off an unprecedented triumph, Mr Vince is desperate to appear to have contributed to the success when we all know that his contribution and actual knowledge of the technical and financial aspects of the deal are zero. Had it been left to him and Harlow Labour his 'actual negotiations and grown up politics' would have certainly led to a Terminus House Mark II blighting our town.

This is not a joint statement. It is statement of achievement and fact by Council Leader Dan Swords and a pathetic statement of waffle by hot air merchant, Chris Vince. A total loser!

James Leppard, what are the technical and financial aspects of this deal.. was this a cash buy or a loan. ? When will information be available, will it be this side of election, or after. ? You say it's private, why is this private, what happens to the freedom of information act.. I think most people would want to know this important information.

Kim O'Connor, once the Contractual Confidentiality period lapses it will be fully divulged. There are no secrets and, I am confident you will be pleasantly reassured.

Just to add, it is talking grown up politics is it not.

So need rent and maintain cost ever year and who pays that and how will that be sent up for the renter?

It seems to me that everyone that's complaining about the cost , which we don't know yet , obviously have nice warm homes to live in. The people desperate for a roof over their head could'nt care less what it cost , and I don't blame them.

No ones saying that Eddie, every one deserves a roof over there heads... stop twisting people s words.

By the way Kim O'Connor. Nothing has been heard from either Harlow Greens or Harlow Labour with regard to the hustings. Pretty bad form, not to say bad manners not even replying. Will be very embarrassing if they go ahead with just the Conservatives and Harlow Alliance with widely publicised information that the Greens and Labour were too scared to face public debate and public scrutiny.

Will this also be used to house homeless who only seem to be offered Terminus house and templefields neither of which are habitable especially for those with MH diagnosis
