LANCE McCarthy, chief executive at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT), has announced today (26 March) that he is moving on to be the chief executive for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey.

Hattie Llewelyn, chair of The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, said: “My congratulations to Lance on his new role and a huge thank you from all the members of the board and people at PAHT.

“Lance has led the trust for the last seven years and I am proud of what he has achieved; from coming out of CQC quality special measures, to being part of the New Hospital Programme and treating 50,000 more patients every year. Thank you, Lance for your passion, compassion and commitment to our people and the patients we care for.”

Lance McCarthy, chief executive, added that: “It has been a privilege to be the chief executive at PAHT over the last seven years, and I will forever have so many memories from working here.

“I know that the trust will continue on its improvement journey with the implementation of a state-of-the-art electronic health record this year (2024) along with increased partnership working and integration of local services, and building a fantastic new hospital for local people.”

Lance leaves PAHT at the end of July. The recruitment of a new chief executive is underway.

Useless waste of space, he has done nothing for our local hospital other than authorise unnecessary spending and sitting on his behind whilst letting everything go to pot as per usual.

@Si - haters gunna hate. Do you even know what you’re talking about? Doubtful. Have you ever even spoken to Lance or worked at the hospital? He’s a really genuine guy who actually cares about people rather than £. I’d love do you to do his role for a week and see if you’re still criticising after….

Actually Si, I beg to defer! PAH has suffered for years prior to Lance from Acting short-term CEOs. Lance bought stability, common sense and a determination to improve things. All of which, in my opinion he has achieved. As the UKIP PPC in 2019, he made himself and his team available to meet with all candidates. He was warm, knowledgeable, jovial and generally glad that candidates had gone to meet him. He was honest with his opinions, said he didn't know if he didn't, and said clearly where he agreed and disagreed. PAH is better after seven years of Lance, and losing him is a blow in my opinion. I wish him well in his new role and would welcome him back any time. Thanks for being so approachable too! My very best wishes. Mark Gough - UKIP Harlow Leader.

Why haven't the questions over spending been answered? Yet he's allowed to move on to another role. It wasn't just the las Vegas one was it? I don't think anyone is saying he's a horrible person, I don't know him, but it leaves a sour taste when no one has been held to account for poor management decisions.

@JB does make a point regarding spending issue, we know the NHS in is a difficult position but that trip to Vagas must have been authorised by him knowing full well the state the Hospital is currently in...at the end of the day I don't know how he can get away and justify that.

@ Mark Gough, don't make me laugh, of course his going to have time for you....err back in 2019, what has he done since then? (2020,2021,2022,2023) what positive changes has he made? spending, the hospital falling apart, stress and anxiety of staff, the bullying, the parking shambles. you show us proof, the public what he has done to help? - I'm sorry and I don't mean to be rude but I have no faith in any politician right now so why would I want to believe in what you might have to say.

The public sector jobs merry go round. He should have been fired over the 50K trip to vegas and 30K consultants

Bit odd that Pathology services have just been contracted out and now our Chief Exec is off elsewhere, no?

I think that both he and our MP have finally realised that there is going to be a new hospital any time soon and both are going on to pastures new.

It should be noted that NHS Foundation Trusts usually pay senior management more than regular NHS Trusts. However, Lance McCarthy has done a good job at PAH and should be congratulated. I wish him well for the future at Frimley.
