Tory leader hopes for decision over suspended councillor James Leppard “within days”

News / Sat 4th May 2024 at 12:26pm

BACK on April 18th, we published details regarding the suspension of Conservative councillor James Leppard.

This followed an expose from Hope Not Hate.

For the record, we asked Harlow Conservative leader, Dan Swords about it on the day before the local elections (Wednesday) and in the early hours of Friday morning after his party had retained control of the council.

Both questions can be seen below.

We will chase up.

So there we have it. James Leppard was elected as a Conservative. Yes, innocent until proven guilty and at the same time suspended and therefore ineligible to hold office. Crazy

I would be amazed by any outcome which jeopardises the control of the council, politicians want one thing only and it is power

Can someone tell us who is doing the investigating? And will they be at all biased in favour of getting a Tory majority even at the cost of brushing Islamophobia under the carpet? And will Your Harlow spend as much time trying to dig up the dirt on this as it has Carly Burd?

I think there is a difference between suspension and de selection. The alleged incident appeared to have happened several years ago and was brought into public notice prior to the election. So is this a case of "I'm more holy than you" and nobody in the Labour Party have never said or thought the same? When one party is accused of playing politics to keep in power could not the same be said that it was only brought up at this late stage to gain power?

Tbh I'm not sure which is most concerning, the lack of transparency over all this, or all the people who voted for him regardless of the allegations. If youre suspended pending investigation in any other job you're not able to perform those duties. Whatever your political leaning there should be questions regarding the conduct here

What a farce.Don't believe anything Dan Swords says.

The matter needs to be referred to the Electoral Commission. They need to independently rule on the questions that if suspended from their party : - should a Councillor be able to run at all? - if able to run, should a suspended Councillor need to run as an independent? - should steps have been taken to inform every household in the ward of the suspension and allegations that precipitated the suspension? What is also of great concern is that despite the suspension the Conservative party continued posting election leaflets right up to and including election day that showed the Councillor as a Conservative but with ño indication about the suspension. The ballot paper showed the Councillor as an approved member representing the Conservative party but from which he had been suspended. There's a distinct lack of transparency here. Had people known about the suspension and reason they may well have voted differently. The party cannot assume the electorate were adequately informed and did nothing to ensure voters were aware of the situation. The Electoral Commission may view this as a situation that's a significant irregularity.

Councillor James Leppard was looking into a problem I have, then was told by the council to stop. A week later he was suspended. Strange.

Seems the left wing campaign group were at it again, "Hope not Hate" are hiding behind a hidden agenda and are as dangerous as Far Right groups, they have only one aim and that is solely a Labour Government at any cost.

I notice Labour leaning comments over the Labour By-election candidate in Rochdale were rather minimal. Fact is in both cases nomination forms were in meaning neither ballot paper could be changed.

Pedro - Think members of Socialist Worker, Momentum and union support and sponsorship and maybe you will have an idea about Hope not Hate, so fair to say you are right. Nostradamus - a work of fiction perhaps, massive media covered on JL across multi-medias locally, regionally and nationally prior to the local election. Be interesting to see what the Electoral Commission make of it, if they take it up, bearing in mind 826 people voted for JL arguably with full knowledge of what was going on.

I am from a Muslim background and until last Thursday was an elected Councillor for Toddbrook ward. I have known Cllr James Leppard for many years. He is very personable and not the slightest bit racist. Such accusations are completely unfounded. The article used to defame him has not been set in context. What he was angry about was a terrorist outrage in Vienna. He has nothing against the Muslim community, only terrorists, as do I . Such people do not represent Islam and only demean it. The article was aimed at criminals as are all terrorists irrespective of their faith, race or creed. So is Harlow Labour now adding to its already established anti-Semitic credentials a tacit support for terrorist criminals?

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if this was all a distraction cooked up by Harlow Labour to cover up their own screw ups of no budget , no plans, just whinging. Chris Vince is only interested in becoming the MP and now looks a right plonker after having brought Keir Starmer and Angela Raynor here on Wednesday saying how great he is and how he had it all in the bag. This all smells like a Labour stunt along with their far left mates at Hate not Hope. Can you imagine Vince as our MP??? Robert Halfon please don't leave.

The last Labour council in Harlow was a total shambles. Council House repairs would take months if not yrs to be dealt with. Yet within a matter of a couple of months of a Conservative council the large backlog of repairs including black mould was dealt with. A labour council in Harlow has proved it just doesn't work.

Let's not be dumb. Given the timing this is obviously a grubby stunt by Labour and then getting Hope not Hate involved. Has anyone actually read their website or what JL is supposed to have written? They are extreme left wing nutters about as impartial as having Momentum to investigate anti-semitism in the Labour Party. This is Vince, Ingall and co just blowing smoke to cover up how crap Labour are in this town.

Are you saying the tories wouldn't have done the same if the shoe was on the other foot? The political arena is like a school playground at the best of times

Resident, why would they waste time attacking a bunch of losers? The Tories did present a plan. Vince did a Black Adder Baldrick and tried a 'cunning plan' with the usual success of Baldrick. Baldrick is however better dressed and has a higher IQ.

Asghar Sahail Malik I'm glad you didn't get elected again you proved yourself to be the laziest councillor ever! You didn't turn up to meetings very often & never took up casework. Shame on you for taking the allowance paid for by Harlow taxpayers!

These two links below are must reads for anyone interested in the truth about this case. Harlow Labour in a cynical and malicious manner has sought to defame a perfectly decent councillor enlisting the help of a malignant, unpatriotic, extremist organisation, hiding beneath charitable status (no doubt to evade tax) that is seeking to undermine our democracy by imposing authoritarian censorship and seeking to destroy free speech and our culture. Now Labour have sowed the wind through their underhand machinations, may they now reap the whirlwind. The comments of Mr Malik carry significant weight and context. This looks like an ill-conceived move by Labour to malign a decent councillor. Chris Vince, having now resigned, should (if he has any dignity) retract the malicious allegations and offer an apology to both the councillor and the town.
