We ask Harlow Labour: Is there still a place for socialism?

Elections / Sat 1st Jun 2024 at 10:19am

LAST month, whilst interviewing Hilary Benn MP in Harlow, we asked him if there was still a place for socialism in the modern day Labour Party.

His answer is below.

In light of the recent selection controversies surrounding Diane Abbott, Fazia Shaheen and a number of other Labour candidates, we thought we would ask a number of the left of centre Labour councillors, a number of whom were members of Momentum at the time of the last General Election, the same question.

They issued a collective statement.

“Diane Abbott has been received back into the Party, having apologised. We understand that Keir Starmer has said no final decision has been taken about her standing in the General Election as a Labour Party candidate. She was first elected to Parliament 40 solid years ago. She has served her constituents faithfully and well and she’s had to deal with more abuse than any other MP, ever. She’s a formidable campaigner whose loyalty to the Party is indisputable.

We’ve heard little about the reason for Faiza’s no longer being a candidate. No doubt that’ll become clearer over the next week or so. As for Lloyd Russell-Moyle: we have no reliable information on his situation.

“So…. the question is: is there room for socialism in the Labour Party? The answer? Yes, we’re in it. We believe in fighting for our fellow human beings: not just for ourselves. In fact, that’s why we’re Labour Party members”.

The message of Socialism is: "STUDY, GET A GOOD JOB AND WORK HARD AND WE WILL 'REDISTRIBUTE' YOUR MONEY TO SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T".

Socialism is the creed of failure. Whenever it is tried people end up worse off, especially those it is meant to help

The best answer to this question comes from Ralph Miliband, father of Labour ministers David and Ed. In his famous 1961 book 'Parliamentary Socialism' Ralph says: "Of political parties claiming socialism to be their aim, the Labour Party has always been one of the most dogmatic – not about socialism, but about the parliamentary system."

Labour doesn’t care about British working families.

What's the point of the Conservative Party except to line the pockets of rich developers whilst partying during lockdown, wasting money on below spec PPE , setting COVID loose in care homes, trying to find for Barnard Castle, running the nhs into the ground, destabilising the economy, doubling mortgages, closing badly built schools they commisioned, allowing private Water Companies to divert raw sewage into every river and £billions of our money into foreign speculators bank accounts?
