Dental crisis now a top issue on the doorstep

THE British Dental Association has said failure to set out credible plans to save NHS dentistry will hit the parties at the ballot box, with evidence showing the state of the service is now at the forefront of voter concerns across the South and East of England.
A new survey of voters in by YouGov reveals the access crisis in dentistry is a top doorstep issue in the South and East of England in this General Election:
The BDA has called on all parties to offer real urgency and ambition to save the service and prevent widening inequalities. It has set out its key priorities for the next parliament, on ending the access crisis, halting the exodus from the workforce and refocusing on prevention. However, it has stressed that any real progress hinges a decisive break from the discredited NHS contract dentists in England work to.
The professional body dubbed the Government’s recent recovery plan unworthy of the title, stressing that all parties need to offer more than tweaks if this service is going to survive.
BDA Chair Eddie Crouch said:
“NHS dentistry is now a top issue on the doorstep because millions have no options.
“Access and cost of living crises have collided, and thus far Government hasn’t stepped up to the plate.
“Politicians might lose their seats if they fail to act, but voters risk losing this service for good.”
Something for all parties to get their teeth into, if they have any left that is?
As a child the majority of dental treatment was done on the NHS, now most people are treated privately. This is due to 14 years of Tory Governments running down the service to a state where individuals are forced to go private. This is what the intend to do with health and welfare. Run down the NHS until people decide they are better off with private care.
The issues raised by the BDA is something the Liberal Democrats have been talking about for some time. We have come up with specific polices to not only get quality dentistry to everyone who needs it, but also preventative measures to ensure children and adults have good dental care. Our top 3 areas: We will fundamentally change the broken NHS dental contract and put patient care before government targets. We will challenge the decade of real-terms cuts to dental budgets and secure better long-term funding, to ensure NHS dentists are in every community and there aren’t any dental deserts. Thirdly, on the basis the prevention is better than cure, we will reverse the tory cuts to public health and put money into ensuring children and their families have the support they need to ensure good dental care. These are choices the Liberal Democrats are making and it is worth it because dental care is now such an important issue.
