General Election 24: Labour’s Chris Vince reflects on third week of campaigning

Elections / Fri 14th Jun 2024 at 07:11am

LABOUR candidate Chris Vince has been writing an election diary as he fights to be the next MP for Harlow.

“IT is now over three weeks since the General Election was called, since then we’ve spoken to thousands of residents across Harlow and the villages who are desperate for change.

On Friday we were out listening to residents in Bush Fair along with the General Secretary of the Cooperative Party Joe Fortune, where we were able to talk about how the next Labour government’s pledge to tackle abuse of retail workers will be very welcome.

Over the weekend we were out listening to residents in Church Langley, Bush Fair and Mark Hall.

On Monday the Labour team were in Great Parndon where we were delighted to be joined by Frank Jackson, former Councillor and chair of Harlow Council, who at 95 is Harlow Labour’s oldest member.

Tuesday we were in Netteswell, along with former Harlow MP Bill Rammell, who also joined us on Wednesday in Latton Bush and Stewards Ward.

Today (Thursday), on the day that Labour launched its manifesto for Change, we returned to Newhall to talk to residents about Labour’s 5 missions. It was clear that many former Conservative voters want change and are pleased by the clear commitment from Labour to have strong fiscal rules, an increase in nursery places and more police on the streets of our communities,

And Britain's second biggest union Unite, the one with the largest private sector membership, has refused to sign off on the manifesto. This is because the much talked about New Deal for Workers has been watered down to appease Labour's big business donors. Labour hasn't said it will be the "most business friendly government in history" for nothing. The Swiss cheese New Deal for Workers has so many holes in it that a P&O Ferries Fire and Rehire style event csn ocvur under a Labour Government. Independent Andrew Feinstein is standing against Sir Keir Starmer in his Holborn and St Pancras constituency and he doesn't rate Labour's manifesto. See https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/andrew-feinstein-whats-wrong-labour-manifesto

I am of an age I have seen many general elections , I can tell you now it never changes no matter who's in goverment. I have struggled under all of them. They are all useless and only care about themselves, we are just the plebs. They all lie to get in power, and never do what they say in their manifestos . Mark my words , if Labour get in they will look at the finances and say , its worse than we thought so we will have to raise taxes .

Chris Vince was rejected as Labour candidate in Chelmsford, rejected in Colchester and only last month rejected in the local elections to lead Harlow Council. What has happened that now makes him suitable to represent us in Parliament? So what is not good enough for Chelmsford or Colchester is good enough for Harlow? It is absurd that Labour have been unable to select a more credible candidate. We have a choice between a true Harlow lady with real Westminister experience or a serial reject and failure. I hope the people of Harlow show the same good judgment they demonstrated in May and elect somebody with real local standing, connections and dedication who can be a worthy representative of our town in Parliament.

Alex, Robert Halfon was rejected twice by Harlow voters, many MPs go through similar failures. Hannah Ellis wasn't even the stand out candidate in her own council ward only last month.

Alex, are you really saying that electing a lying, cheating, egotistical crook like BoJo was a wise choice by us Harlow citizens last time???

The Labour and Conservative manifestos are such a copy and paste jobs. Where is the radical change? Also if the polls are right and there is a Labour Government, do you really want a Labour MP in Harlow who won't challenge them, won't speak up for the people of Harlow, and will vote with the Government at every turn? We have seen what happens when you have a Conservative MP with a Conservative Government in place - nothing gets delivered for Harlow. Do we really want to replicate that with Labour? I suspect not. We need a strong, independent minded, liberal MP, who will challenge the potential Labour Government.

For Alex's benefit, Chris Vince also got rejected in Thurrock big style: didn't even become the Labour candidate.

For Alex, the evidence Chris Vince attempted to become Thurrock Labour candidate: https://www.yourthurrock.com/2017/11/21/general-election-battle-labour-candidate-six-names/

We need change….I am sick of this immoral…lying…corrupt 14 years of conservative government….this country is in a terrible state….Food Banks….masses are poorer…..if the masses are poorer we all suffer…..increased migration…..increased crime…..everything more expensive…paying the highest tax in 70 years…..can’t get to see a fully qualified GP….Lizz Truss crashed the economy….not following their own rules….covid parties where both Johnson and Sunak received fines…..ditching the WW2 veterans….by staying only half the day when everyone else stayed the whole day…..prioritising his own election (itv interview) over not fully respecting 80 year D Day, and not staying for the whole day….Everyone else stayed the whole day including our cancer sick King. This is a slap in the face also to anyone whose family members were actively involved in the WW2 campaign. How can anyone trust a PM who behaves this way with National Security? These are the kind of decisions that have no room for error….. I am sick of every time they mess up they seem to think a quick apology ask for forgiveness and no need to suffer consequences….the Conservatives don’t take responsibility for their actions and we are then supposed to trust them. I rather now take my chances with Labour…..

David Forman, I think you need to do a little less newspaper article trolling and and a little more looking at the country under the Conservatives. All over the country hospitals crumbling before our eyes, staff over worked and under payed, schools with no funding, roads not fit for purpose, town centres with every other shop closed down. What sort of a country has this government turned us into! And all the while, the only thing the Torys have been doing is stabbing their own leaders in the back and foisting some other unelected idiot upon the nation. Wake up and smell the coffee . . . or rather the smell of corruption!

I hope Chris Vince is successful…. For there to be change is up to each person to try and be on electoral roll and get down the poll station with photo ID and vote…it’s the main power each of us has to choose…who we think will best serve our interests….individually and the wider society.

Alex, Churchill was rejected directly after the second World War.

Which part of Mark Hall did you visit. I never saw you. Did you look how run down it is . The vegetation, the roads, abandoned garages. We're you offered any drugs by the shady people or trip on the paths whilst dodging the shady people on their scooters. Thought not.

Chris I know you read these pages and comments, what is your reply to comments made by a senior labour minister who said they refuse to rule out reclassification of council tax bands and increases to peoples council tax?
