THE wonderful cricket exhibition at Harlow Museum has attracted many local visitors but Harlow Cricket Club struct gold when Julie Baker and her husband  John spotted her grandfather’s picture in two of the historic cricket photographs on display.

The first, dated around 1906 show Charlie in wicket keeping attire sitting in the front row of a Moor Hall Guest XI featuring the then Moor Hall owner John Balfour along with Jock (Jack) Swire as well as other local dignitaries of the time which also includes Sam Deards as an umpire.

The second picture dated 1936 with Charlie is as an umpire.

Charles William Stuart was born in 1883 coming to Harlow as a baby and lived in Harlow for the remainder of his life until his passing in 1964. Charlie was involved with much of the community, as well as cricket he played for Harlow Town Football Club, a member of the gymnastics team and Harlow Brass Band.

After leaving school, probably around the mid to late 1890’s he went to work at the Moor Hall estate. Probably because he was a good cricketer as well, which was common practise in those days when ‘country house’ cricket was popular. Club records also show he played against the MCC in 1906 for Mr Balfour’s team.

After returning from the Great War, he became the head gardener at Mark Hall for the Arkwright’s also a keen cricketing  family. He lived at Parndon Hall Gardens until his retirement when he moved to Park Lane until his passing in 1964.

He was wounded at Gallipoli during the war which possibly why he turned to umpiring, keeping up his keen interest in the game.

Julie was able to provide two team pictures of Harlow Town FC with her grandfather dating around 1900 and copies have been passed on the Colin Barratt the clubs historian. Another picture as featured here shows Charlie as a batsman but probably taken in his back garden!
