Car Theft: Still well over 400 cars a year stolen from the streets of Harlow (and very few cases solved)

Crime / Mon 2nd Sep 2024 at 09:47am

WE have just published a press release from Essex Police with the headline being:

“As part of a dedicated response to vehicle thefts and to target those involved in organised crime, we have seen a reduction in the number of vehicles stolen”.

We thought we would look at the statistics for Harlow and then allow you to draw your own conclusions:

Here are the statistics for theft of vehicle with the number solved in brackets.

These are rolling figures. (see link below).

June 2023-June 2024: 417 (5)

May 2023-May 2024: 417 (10)

April 2023 to April 2024: 425: (8)

March 2023-March 2024: 442: (9)

February 2023-February 2024: 453 (11)

January 2023-January 2024: 469 (11)

December 2022-December 2023: 471: (13)

November 2022-November 2023: 469 (13)

October 2022-October 2023: 446 (11)

September 2022-September 2023: 418 (10)

August 2022-August 2023: 398 (9)

July 2022-July 2023: 385 (8)

There looks like there has been inroads. If you look at December 2022 to December 2023 (471) and compare to May 2023 to May 2024 (417).

However, solve rates are, by any standard, underwhelming.

I think you have misunderstood the figures. They are rolling numbers, i.e. summing crimes from the previous 12 months. You can't add those numbers up. The number of vehicles stolen in one year to July 2024 is 385 (the last figure). The clue is in the header at the top of each page: "Rolling 12 months to July".

So, essex police fail on crime, nothing new, and then they crow about taking a few weed plants off the street... Priorities clearly in order...

Many stolen cars are parked in the side roads in Harlow and Roydon. After a week they get moved. The police know and do nothing

My car is in those statistics! When it was stolen the police refused to attend the crime scene, they did not collect any of the evidence or review CCTV footage. It turned up 3 months later and they asked me to come and retrieve it (at my expenses) but we had already settled with our insurer. Great job!

A Warburton's performance: the best number of car thefts Essex Police solve in any year is a baker's dozen. Looking at the probability of getting caught, it is hardly surprising there is so much crime. I think Churchill would sum it up as: "In the field of recidivism, so little has been done for so many, by so many".
