Live facial recognition technology to be used in Harlow on Saturday

FOLLOWING the successful use of our new live facial recognition technology in Clacton and Southend, it will be deployed for a third time on Saturday.
Live facial recognition vans will be used in Harlow on Saturday 7 September.

We use the technology to find people wanted for serious offences, to help enforce orders against those whose faces are put on a ‘watch list’ and to protect those who are vulnerable and at risk of harm.
If your face is not on the watch list, the technology deletes your image in a fraction of a second. It is not retained in any way and is not stored on any database.
The Harlow deployment is an extension to the Clear, Hold, Build project, which aims to eradicate criminal activity and regenerate key areas of the town.
It is a Home Office-backed scheme which brings together public services to tackle offending and address underlying issues affecting the local community.
Its ultimate aim is to produce sustained, long-term change in places which have been affected by serious and organised crime by pursuing offenders, breaking up and dispersing gangs, and creating strong, resilient neighbourhoods.
Chief Inspector Paul Austin, Harlow district commander, said: “This is the third use of this innovative technology. In the first two deployments, in Clacton and Southend, we made five arrests, resulting from ten positive alerts.
“This tech is used to help us locate people who we want to speak to as part of serious ongoing investigations or to manage people who have had court orders or conditions imposed upon them as a result of committing offences.”
Ch Insp Austin added: “I want to be clear – criminals who have committed serious offences cannot walk around freely in our community and this technology allows us to keep our communities safe and ultimately locate people who we believe to have committed serious crimes.”
That's me wearing a mask then hideous technology
Adam if you've got nothing to hide why cover your face
Park it permanently at the bus station
This is cods wallop
John Sharpe, Does Adam covering his face make him guilty of a crime? Maybe the Police will start thinking when you draw your curtains you are up to no good!
John Sharpe - Nothing to hide today who knows what government will make illegal or want to control next. I do not want to live like in China under the CCP. It is a slippery slope especially now we have Labour in power who are exceptionally authoritarian, as all Marxists are.
Good, no issues with me. Excellent use of technology to catch dangerous offenders who are walking among us.
They should work well when kids walk around wearing balaclavas!
If your face is not on the watch list, the technology deletes your image in a fraction of a second. It is not retained in any way and is not stored on any database. I am not convinced of this as I am a technologist and know how data is created and once created it is very difficult to delete completely.
I say don't exhibit or display where it is placed just keep it randomly or install it randomly.. if a culprit knows the camera is there he won't go or mask himself .. then the purpose of the tech becomes useless.
Good 💡 idea
Adam and his political commentary is what keeps me coming back. Great stuff.
Does it do passport photos?
In case you wondered why everyone wearing balaclavain town centre tomorrow 🤣
About time Start cracking down on criminality in this country Issue it to every town then maybe we will start to make in roads into getting this country back on track
I'm selling designer ballies if anyone is interested? All top brands.
F - does that mean you will vote for me when I stand for office ;)
Smile your on camera
On the one hand 1984 approaches on the other it takes Florence to point out the b.,g obvious. Besides, the criminal justice system and prisons are so broken that criminals probably aren't too phased about being caught.
This gov is more worrying by the day somehow, what an achievement. How de wo know this technology won't ever be used to crack down on legitimate protests? Just trust the government? Search channel Big Broter Watch to see more about why this technology shouldn't be trusted. A man was stopped in London for looking similar to an offender and he was mistakenly pinged by the facial recognition system. Thw officers would not let him go. Luckily the whole thing was filmed by the people contributing to the channel. To highlight what a very insightful comment in that video said, why should we be treated as guilty when the technology they use fails?
It's wasted up there as there's never anyone there to identify! Ghost Town!
Thanks for the description of how it works and I am sure if you are not wanted by tge Police or Courts then nothing to worry about - but surely if you want to catch the criminals then advertising where you are going to be is counter productive? Why does this need to be in a van - why can't it be used with tge CCTV cameras around the town or gave these been discontinued?
Great idea and I'm in full support of this .I actually walked in town Saturday and saw the van and I feel safer knowing the town is in need of this to better public safety .
Now that they have announced it and covered the Town centre shopping area can the following Harlow residents please come out:😀 1. Osama bin Laden 2. El Chapo 3. John Dillinger 4. Bonnie and Clyde 5. Whitey Bulger 6. Ted Bundy 7. Eric Rudolph 8. Ramzi Yousef 9. James "Whitey" Bulger 10. Pablo Escobar
Should be here permanently
Why are we spending our taxes to catch more potential villains when we have no where to put them. Why not build the jails first. If crime is falling why are we jailing more and more people. Something just does not add up!
