Harlow Stand Up To Racism set to march against fascism
History / Thu 10th Oct 2024 at 09:30am
ON Monday evening, there was a well attended meeting called by Harlow Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) about how to mobilise support against the threats of racism and fascism.

This came two days after anti racists remembered the Battle of Cable Street in which Jews, Communists and Socialists stood together against Oswald Moseley’s fascists on 4 October 1936.
A speaker from Care4Calais spoke about the way in which politicians’s rhetoric has encouraged people to point the finger of blame at migrants for their problems rather than at the years of austerity imposed by those politicians on ordinary people.
She described how those seeking asylum, arriving terrified and wet on the Kent beaches were met with hostility and abuse from the far right. She made the point that slogans like “Stop the boats” and “Smash the gangs” only stir this hatred and that there would be no gangs or small boats if safe routes were provided for those fleeing war, oppression and persecution. There were also speeches from the Labour and Green Parties and a trans speaker who raised the issue of the way in which the far right were using LGBTQ+ rights to sow division.
Samira Ali, national organiser for SUTR both introduced and ended the meeting with a call to action, in particular, to be on the streets of London on 26 October to march against the call by Steven Yaxley Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson) to ‘take over the streets’.
The lone racist who gave a Nazi salute when Harlow anti racists gathered in solidarity and in numbers at the Obelisk in the town centre following the far right riots which including attempts to set fire to hotels housing migrants, was exactly that; an unpleasant individual who was led away by police. We need to stand up and be counted. We are many, they are few.
Join us on 26 October. For details of transport see below
Whilst very supportive of this initiative, I find a strange double standard in the report above. In the penultimate paragraph it says: "We need to stand up and be counted." Well, I don't notice Labour councillor Lanie Shears being mentioned as she was one of the billed speakers. Nor was Yasmin Gregory of the Green Party mentioned. Perhaps the organisers SUTR would like to confirm this? Maybe," stand up and be counted" only works up to the point of not upsetting Sir Keir Starmer? I'm sure councillor Shears' constituents would like to know her views on this subject, so I look forward to her Letter to Editor.
I have not noticed any racists demonstrations in Harlow other than the anti semitic outbursts by pro Hamas and pro Hezbollah groups. Are they included in the denunciations?
Thanks Surinder you have made your point very eloquently, I agree
This town does nothing for our Jewish community.
Sunny side up lefty loon confirmed
Left wing stirring. I’ve not noticed any race-related issues. It’s always the left creating something that’s not there.
Sidney… you are spot on. However I have seen “ I love Hezbollah and Hamas” placards in London and other Anti-Jew protest.
It is completely wrong that anyone with an opinion against uncontrolled immigration is considered racist or right wing. It is totally unsustainable for a small island to keep taking in unlimited numbers from elsewhere when services and housing can't cope with the people already here. What is needed is a grown up conversation that considers both sides to find a solution to the issue.
I must admit I did chuckle when I saw this "ON Monday evening, there was a well attended meeting called by Harlow Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) about how to mobilise support against the threats of racism and fascism." The far left will try and tell you there are racist and far right people around every corner and only SUTR can save you. The truth of the matter is, groups like SUTR are some of the most intolerant people and groups in most towns and you will struggle to see far right or racism in Harlow. Yes you will see most counties and countries comment on uncontrolled migration but that doesn't make you racist, that makes you pragmatic. The northern hemisphere cannot simply absorb the continued migration from the southern hemisphere, pointing that out doesn't make you racist either. Let's have a quiz. How many times in the last 5 years have you seen a real racist far right protest in Harlow? How many times have we had the far left, intolerant of others, have a protest in Harlow?
Seamus I doubt a peaceful protest against uncontrolled immigration would be allowed, let alone a far right one. But I can't remember any overt far right protests or actions. It does feel like a large section of society is being shutdown for having genuine concerns. You only have to look at other countries to see this alarm over uncontrolled immigration is widespread. It doesn't matter where it's coming from , it is simply unsustainable and it's deeply worrying when it coincides with disintegrating services, poor employment prospects and insufficient affordable housing.
The BBC reported this week that reports of anti-semitic incidents have reached a record high. The silence from SUTR about this is absolutely deafening. It tells you all you need know about them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx285v8djejo
SUTR and Hope Not Hate are the exact antithesis of their names. They are the most bigoted, intolerant and censorious bodies around. They are a menace to free speech and thought. They embody the odious characteristics that they supposedly oppose.
Spot on Marcela.
Some people in this thread seem to have forgotten the "Farage Riots" this summer. Fuelled by false allegations about migrants people set about burning migrants in detention hotels and attacking people on the streets. Much of the distrust and hatred that led to the hideous sights on our streets had been fuelled by "Tommy Robinson". "Tommy" has declared a day of Right Wing anti migrant action on October 26th. As before it is appropriate that decent people counter these demonstrations. Counter hatred towards black and brown citizens. Counter hatred against Muslim and Jewish citizens. It's worth people investigating the truth about plans - rather than just reposting conspiracy and hate theories from the internet.
Murray you are wasting your time, these people will never change. It's always someone else's fault. Always because of the other side.
Murray, given your dislike for false allegations on the internet, I'm puzzled why you didn't mention the boss of "Hope not hate" Nick Lowles who at the height of those events who tweeted on X "“Reports are coming in of acid being thrown out of a car window at a Muslim woman in Middlesbrough. Absolutely horrendous.”. This was seen by over 100,000 people, only to be challenged by Middlesborough police saying they had seen no such reports of any such event. I look forward to your condemnation. There are plenty more examples of groups such as SUTR and hope not hate stirring up hatred for their own promotion.
You are spot on with you point Sidney. It's the lefties get out of jail card when they have been causing problems or been up to no good.
Seamus, I've not seen a far-right protest in Harlow in the past 5 years, but could that possibly be due to the good work of Harlow SUTR making it known that bigots, fascists and racists are not welcome in town? In my lifetime, I've never seen wild big cats roam through Broadwalk, and can only attribute this to the efforts of Tiger Man.
It is great to see people organising in Harlow to take on the fascists! Anti-fascists beat back Mosely in the 1930s and they will beat back that fascist crook 'Tommy Robinson' too!
Hey, Seamus .. yes - happy to call out the otherwise excellent Nick Lowles for an error ... look forward to seeing you do the same for race hate and fear mongering re migrants and asylum seekers.
Rob Vinten - the black, Asian & Jewish people who regularly attend events organised by Tommy Robinson - are they fascists too?
Rob, to my knowledge, neither tommy robinson or Mosely have ever visited Harlow so why reference them? Adam S, very unlikely although tigerman sounds cool. Murray, your terminology betrays your one sidedness. Lowles making false racist comments at the hieght of the unrest, is described by you as an error. Would that same error be classed as an error if said by someone you would consider "far right".? I have some doubt.
Could somebody please confirm if MPs and councillors are still not allowed to attend protests. I do think that the backing of these people make some protests more meaning ful in the respect that it shows that they care.
