HARLOW Council’s new cabinet member for economic development, Councillor Michael Hardware, has welcome the news that £1.1 billion will be invested in Stansted Airport.
The announcement was made yesterday (14 October) by the government. More than 5,000 jobs will be created as a result of a 5-year, £1.1 billion investment in the airport.

The funding will expand the existing terminal by a third, securing new air routes to key business and holiday destinations and boosting local supply chains.
Councillor Hardware said that the investment is both good for business in Harlow but also good for residents. He said:
“Stansted Airport is on Harlow’s doorstep and we will work hard to ensure that our town benefits from this investment. Not only will residents benefit from new air routes to new destinations but there will be new jobs on offer and opportunities for local businesses to supply the airport.
People who work at the airport get discounted public transport travel which makes it a great option for Harlow residents. We work closely with the airport to promote job opportunities and there is a jobs fair coming up this month on 23 October – full details are here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-stansted-airport-jobs-fair-tickets-1002962918087
“With Harlow being so close to the airport that also attracts businesses who want to relocate to the town so more investment in the airport is all in all very good news for Harlow. As part of our mission to secure investment into Harlow’s future we will actively work with the owners to be a part of the exciting new chapter for the airport.”
More noise and more air pollution from new routes. Not a wonderful thing if you live under the flight path.
So, councillor Hardware, please tell me how the increased number of flights won't mean more noise, more air pollution and more greenhouse gas emissions?
Can't see how more flights into Stansted will improve the quality of life in Harlow, the town centre is becoming a no go area demolition site, PAH is crumbling, congestion getting worse and crime and antisocial behaviour in places like Newhall on the rise. Would be better if Councillors tended to their own patch and the residents they are supposed to represent rather than dabbling in the regional economic situation.
Agree with other comments of noise directly over us. Bad enough as it is. Can be up to 1am at times. I have complained to the airport but get the corporate whitewash. Poor Harlow suffers again.

A total mistake: Hugely bad for combatting Climate Change: eg just a Journey from Stansted to Amsterdam by air is 26 times more pollution per passenger than rail and if you add in the awful one or two hours hanging around at the airport the time taken is much the same. See https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ePAHNHzcyTqFYXK/. Where the journeys are directly compared. An investment in rail to extend the central line out to Harlow and beyond would have made more sense. Until all aircraft can be powered by hydrogen then all airport expansions across the uk should be put on hold.
