Our Lady of Fatima church placed on Historic England “at risk” register

A HARLOW church which featured on a Chemical Brothers’ album cover is in “desperate need of support” and has been added to the Historic England at risk register reports the BBC.

It was among 29 buildings in the East of England placed on the register for 2024. The region has 427 entries this year, 15 more than 2023.

Historic England chief executive Duncan Wilson said: “Together, we can save our places and find new ways to enjoy the heritage that people value so much.”

The organisation also awarded £730,000 in grants to repair 25 sites in 2023 to 2024 which helped saved and remove 14 sites from the register.

The Heritage at Risk Register is Historic England’s “annual snapshot of the health of England’s valued historic buildings and places”.

Among the 427 entries in the East of England, were 132 places of worship, 11 parks and gardens and one protected wreck site.

The organisation said its latest research showed, external the region’s heritage sector contributed £4.6 billion to the economy and employed 63,000 people annually in 2022.

Heritage minister Sir Chris Bryant said: “The UK has an abundance of heritage sites across the country that attract tourists and provide jobs in local communities.

“Many of these are in desperate need of support.”

Fatima was the first ecclesiastical commission by Gerard Goalen (1918-1999), who designed it in 1953-1954 and was considered “one of the most important British architects of the Roman Catholic Modernist movement”.

Mr Goalen gave the building a strikingly modernist style with stunning large glass panels, but its distinctive spire structure is rotting and the roof needs maintenance.

The church also appeared on the front cover of The Chemical Brothers 1998 album "Brothers Gonna Work It Out"

The building is from the 1950s - a peak period for poor materials and crude construction. The fairly unattractive spire has lost its sceptre, and the lighting that was supposed to show off the stained glass is rarely switched on, though it could be made much less expensive with up-to-date LED lighting. As Harlow has very few visible buildings of quality or distinction, there's a case for the local authority to take over management and maintenance, while charging affordable rent to the church. Since the hideous and untalented town hall was finally dismantled the ersatz public buildings and ugly brutalist flat blocks, the Disney style 'water gardens' are the only buildings that catch the eye- just as memorable as last night's pizza; and the civic centre- like an indoor shopping mall from any new town. The town desperately needs an iconic display somewhere, and for gawdsake and the ungodly, Fatima will have to be it, until they can find a rival designer of quality. At the moment, yet another piece of dross is being built at the Stow, within the sightlines of the church- in this year of tackling depression, H-e-e-e-lp!

Fatima church us truly beautiful and it's inner glory will surprise anyone who has seen only the brutalist exterior. Father Bogdan and his colleague, Father Lescek are loved by their huge congregation with some 500 attending mass every Sunday.
