A NIGHT in with a takeaway is a British family favourite, and its popularity shows no signs of fading according to new figures.

Online searches in  Harlow for ‘takeaway near me open now’ are up by 100% and “takeaway near me open now delivery” has surged by 184% in the last year, proving the demand for dining at home without the fuss. 

As a part of their High Street Trend Report, SumUp, – a provider of POS Lite system – has revealed the UK towns and cities leading the charge in new takeaway and mobile food business openings, by analysing ONS data from the past five years.

The data reveals that the takeaway industry has experienced a significant 14.29% growth across the UK between 2020 and 2024. In comparison, licensed restaurant business locations have grown by 4% in the same timeframe – more than three times less than the growth seen in the takeaway sector.  

Harlow is officially home to most new takeaways and mobile food stand businesses between 2020 and 2024, seeing a 50% increase. An impressive 20 new establishments have opened in Harlow over the last five years.

The demand for takeaway food in the area is also evident in Harlow with searches for ‘takeaway open near me now’ and ‘takeaway near me open now’ up by 100%.

Alongside Harlow, Sutton Coldfield joins the top spot for most takeaway and food stand opens, also seeing a 50% increase in locations since 2020.

Worthing, a seaside town and borough in West Sussex saw the second-highest growth in the number of takeaways and food stands between 2020-2024, an impressive 46.15% increase and is now home to an impressive 95 well-loved takeaways.

The demand is clear from Google searches for this year in West Sussex, for ‘takeaways’ up 49% with a particular interest in ‘takeaway fish and chips near me’ which saw an increase of 86%.

Warrington welcomed the most new takeaway and mobile food businesses with an additional 45 over the last five years

Warrington, a town located in Chesire, has welcomed an additional 45 takeaway and mobile food businesses since 2020 – . more than any other area in the top ten. Now proudly home to 145 takeouts, Warrington has seen a 45% increase in the industry.

Google searches in Warrington have also seen an impressively high increase, with searches for takeaways up by an impressive 556% in 2024, with a clear cuisine favourite being ‘Indian takeaway near me’, which saw a 420% increase in demand this year alone.
