Residents for Uttlesford party against restructuring of local councils

THE most radical change to local Government in half a century will cause a “multi-billion pound upheaval” and must be questioned on whether it “should be on the list of priorities” the Residents for Uttlesford party says reports the Local Democracy Reporter.
Residents for Uttlesford, which runs Uttlesford Council, say the Government is “silent about the diseconomies of breaking up very large authorities like Essex”.

This comes as the Government is pushing on with plans to scrap all councils and replace them with larger authorities with more responsibilities and powers. In Essex, it will see all 15 councils abolished and replaced with fewer authorities, potentially up to five.
The independent party says: “Essex County Council alone employs over 7,500 people. It is one of the largest local authorities in England. To dismantle it and 14 other councils in Essex and reform into different councils is a hugely complex and expensive mega project.
“With the existential threats from climate change, threats to democracy and Europe from Vladimir Putin’s war, threats from President Donald Trump of a trade war, the NHS unable to cope with A&E and waiting lists, the Government desperate for cash, social media mega mad men deliberately putting out lies to foment trouble, and food banks being ever more necessary, it has to be questionable as to whether years of disruption and cost, to council tax payers, not directly to the Government, to tinker with local government should be anywhere on the list of priorities.
“They have done no business case for this multi-billion pound upheaval. They talk of greater efficiency but are silent about the diseconomies of breaking up very large authorities like Essex. There is no evidence that a greater size compared with district councils is better. For example, Essex Children’s Social Care Services are outstanding on the Ofsted rating. Thurrock, already a unitary and nine times smaller and with a vast debt, is also rated outstanding. The efficiencies of councils follow how well they are led and administered, not their size.”
It comes after Essex County Council, Thurrock and Southend Council agreed to write to the Government supporting the proposed change and cancellation of the elections next year. Essex currently has two types of council structure, with two tiers of local government and unitary authorities. Under the two-tier system, which includes Essex County Council, Basildon, Uttlesford, Castle Point Council and others, housing, bin collections, education and other services are split. Thurrock and Southend run all services independently.
They are spot on with their comments. More to follow from the Harlow Aliance Party which will dispel many of the claims being made by local councillors and others in due course.
Residents for Uttlesford and Harlow Alliance are correct in opposing these new mega council structures. Government's do reorganisation to disguise the fact they won't be providing any more money for existing arrangements, but happy to spend a shed load of money in the short term in turning everything upside down. This makes it impossible for the public to make meaningful comparisons between different governments' approach to financing local authorities. Of course, the government hope to recoup some money later on through a load of redundancies. I wonder if the Labour loving union Unison has figured out the loss of membership dues? I think unions Unite and GMB will be more savvy on this. Time for Unison members to jump ship to Unite or GMB.
Radical re organisation always costs shedloads of money and there are times when a system is so broken like rhe nhs that it's unthinkable not to to make changes, however Labour are only dreaming of nhs changes that'll not be here for ten years rather than stopping treatment in hospital corridors which has become a dreadful norm. They are intent on reorganizing the machinery of local government for purely for political purposes at phenomenal cost when it simply needs a service. Reeves and Starmer are meanwhile busy throwing money away on projects like nuclear fusion £41 million that'll never be achieved, billions on nuclear power (Sizewell C, Hinkley Point, mythical SMRs, & nuclear waste repositories) and secretly under the guise of consistency hacking away some of the most outstandingly excellent chunks of the school curriculum and SEND provision (see Education Select Committee 15 Jan) to ensure we have a consistently poor limited education system. They know the price of everything and the cost of nothing. Labour are proving a major disappointment.
Interesting point from Nostradamus on the Education Select Committee. The Committee are also concerned about the government's handling of the review of future funding of BTECs and T-level qualifications. The Committee's Chair wrote to the Minister for Skills and highlighted: "It is concerning to the [further education] sector that the terms of reference for the review have not been published, and that there has not been a full and open consultation process." See background and letter at https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/203/education-committee/news/204210/dont-defund-btecs-education-committee-tells-govt/
Labour and the Conservatives are in favour of this for their own political reasons. Nothing to do with efficiency, nothing to do with saving money. All they care about is keeping themselves in power. They know big Councils with more Councillors and fewer elections is there best bet.
