Meet your hospital leaders – a chance to learn about Princess Alexandra Hospital’s future plans

Health / Mon 17th Mar 2025 at 10:03am

IN January this year, the government confirmed the funding and timetable for a new state-of-the-art hospital for Harlow, following a review of its New Hospital Programme, with construction due to begin in 2032.

As part of its community engagement, the Patient Panel has organised a meet your hospital leaders event on Tuesday 15 April from 2pm to 4pm at the Council Chamber, Civic Centre, Harlow.

This is a chance for the people living and working in Harlow and surrounding areas to find out more about PAHT’s future plans, including the new hospital, how My Alex Health (the patient portal) will benefit patients, the Hertfordshire and West Essex Surgical Centre in St Albans, new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Epping, and more.

There will also be an opportunity for people to share their views.

This is a drop-in session and people are welcome to arrive at any time.

To help the Patient Panel manage visitor numbers they kindly ask that people register their intention to attend using this link > or by scanning the QR code.

Why? Labour has said it will look again at plans in 2035, not build in 2035 and how many of those "hospital leaders" will still even be at PAH in ten years. I would also ask if there are any "hospital leaders" just dedicated to this role and nothing else and if so, will they be sacked under Wes Streetings and Starmers shutting down of NHS England?

You wonder how far that bloke in the wheelchair has pushed his wife? – I bet they managed to get a bus to Old Harlow – From there, he’s had to push her along the grass verge alongside Gilden Way and across the roundabout dodging the traffic racing up to the M11 junction. As for the "hospital leaders" Seamus, the event is still a month off, so I guess between now and then we’ll have an announcement that one or more of them have moved to another Vauxhall Conference League hospital.

Tony, I'm as cynical as the next man that this hospital will ever get built, but *if* they do, then perhaps we can also hope that bus services can be added to it. _Clearly_ complaining about the *current* public transport provision to a field on the edge of town is pointless...

Its a shame the at the working community of Harlow are blocked from attending this event, purely aimed at those retired and not working (due to hours), and only publicised on news on 17/3!! . This ensures a large number of the community are effectively ostracised. - Do they notwant to meet those who might have something to contribute ??

The new version of PAH will not apparently be situated in Harlow. Mr Halfon you have let the people down since you included and priortised a new Harlow hospital in 2010. I know that because that is what you told me and others before you were elected. However, that is now history and we move on. And in doing so I would like to thank the excellent and professional staff in PAH that undertook my surgery last week. They have been treated disgustingly badly for the last 14 years by the last government but treated patients like me with both care and consideration. I give them a heartfelt thanks for their care and professionalism.

This article is not strictly factual. The New Hospital Programme announcement on 25 January this year stated that construction of a new PAH would start between 2032 and 2034. We need the building of this new Hospital ASAP not in XX numbervif years in the future. The current Hospital is overloaded, but still provides a good service to us all. I agree that a bus service needs to be put in place ASAP, this will help those without a car during the daytime (not all families gave two cars).

Last government said it was funded and gave the government ahead, this government has halted funding and pushed it into the next decade, by which time it will be a new government. Any guesses???

The present hospital is too small to handle the population it serves and the existing site has no room for expansion. It is made even worse by the volume of patients it treats from Herts. PAH is falling apart and unsafe in some areas. St. Margarets in Epping is also collapsing so before long we will not have a serviceable hospital in the area. Recruitment of medical and clinical staff could also be affected as the best candidates may not want to work under the present conditions.

If, as the management says, it is going to take a new hospital building to attract decent, competent medical staff, then that is what we need now, not in ten years time! Because let's face it, rich or poor, we are being let down by the NHS in Harlow. We pay the same taxes as people in London, but the level of care and expertise you get there seems a million miles away.

To build a new hospital on the current site would be far quicker and much cheaper than building one in the middle of a field outside of Harlow. A couple of multi-storey car parks need to be built, to include land formally occupied by the Square. Land would then be freed up to build a taller building on less of a footprint, after all the site is planned to take a number of tall flat blocks to help provide 450+ homes once the hospital moves from this site. Lets also not forget that our political leaders see the future of the Town Centre include a number of flat blocks up to sixteen storeys high.
