THE Downs Primary School and Nursery is celebrating a milestone achievement after being rated ‘Good’ in all areas by OFSTED in its most recent inspection, conducted on 20 and 21 May 2025. This follows a determined improvement journey since its previous inspection in 2023.

Inspectors praised the school’s leadership, the quality of teaching, and the positive ethos felt across the community. The report highlights the school’s “coherently planned, broad and balanced curriculum,” the positive relationships between staff and pupils, and the welcoming and safe environment that allows children to thrive.

They recognised the high-quality provision the school provides for its youngest children, stating children in the Nursery get off to a strong start, thanks to calm, engaging, and stimulating classroom and outdoor environments. Effective learning of the early years curriculum ensures that children are well-prepared for the Reception Year.
“To be recognised as a ‘Good’ school across the board is a truly emotional and proud moment,” said Headteacher Rob Calderwood. “Two and a half years ago, we set out on an ambitious journey of improvement. This outcome reflects the unwavering commitment and teamwork of our dedicated staff, our wonderful pupils, and our incredibly supportive families.”

The report commends pupils as being “polite and respectful,” noting that “they behave well in lessons and during social times” and “respond positively to what is expected of them.” Inspectors also highlighted how staff make learning “interesting” and “encourage pupils to work hard,” fostering both engagement and achievement.
“Perhaps the most touching feedback we received was from the inspectors telling us that pupils say, ‘It is a joy to come to school.’ That means the world to us,” Mr. Calderwood added.
The school, part of the Passmores Co-operative Learning Community, received praise for its strong leadership and governance. The report noted that leaders and governors “have been integral to the rapid progress of the school” and work together to ensure continuous reflection and accountability.
The Downs has also made significant strides in reading, with consistent high-quality phonics teaching enabling pupils to “quickly learn to read.” Improvements in the provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) were recognised, alongside efforts to ensure all children have meaningful roles and responsibilities across the school.
“This recognition doesn’t mark the end of our journey,” Mr. Calderwood said. “It is a strong foundation on which we will continue building an inclusive, inspiring and high-achieving school for all.”
