Cooks Spinney Primary Academy / Fri 24th Oct 2025 at 10:59am

A HARLOW teaching assistant has received her British Empire Medal (BEM).

Susan Mapp was recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours in June for her services to Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Susan traveled to Chelmsford this week, where she was officially given her BEM by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst.

Susan Mapp is a special educational needs and disability co-educator at Cooks Spinney Primary Academy.

Sue has worked at Cooks Spinney for 33 years and is highly respected for her dedication and concerns for each and every pupil.

Sue found out in May but is clearly very good at keeping a secret.

Back in June, Sue said: “Thank you all so much for all your lovely kind messages. At the moment I’m so overwhelmed.

“A massive thank you to my husband Stuart and family. My twin sister Sally, Sarah Lyon’s and Tegan for a lovely nomination.

A big thank you to my Cooks Spinney family, to all the students and their families past and present, what a journey I’ve had and am still having, but sadly this is my last year as I prepare to retire.

“Thank you again for all your kind words and support”.

Susan was award the BEM for services to Special Educational Needs.
