The Downs Primary welcomes two new woolly recruits (see them at Reception Open Days)

THE Downs Primary School and Nursery have some baa-rilliant new arrivals, two friendly sheep who have joined the school community!
A local farmer, who can be found on Instagram at @russetflock, was in need of some extra grazing land and offered the sheep a home at the school. Thanks partially to funds raised from the auction of a guitar signed by Ed Sheeran (or should it be ‘Shear-an’?), the school was able to build secure fencing to welcome their new residents.

The sheep are already proving incredibly popular with pupils, who will learn how to care for them as part of their lessons. The project aims to help children understand the importance of looking after animals and respecting their environment, including simple acts like picking up litter and protecting green spaces.
The Downs’ Early Years team also hopes the sheep will make a star appearance in this year’s EYFS nativity play in December. In the future, school families will have the opportunity to help care for the sheep over weekends and holidays.
“They’re incredibly friendly,” said Natalie Cooper (Office Manager). “They come right up to the fence for strokes and snacks. The children adore them, and so do the staff.”
Families considering a place at The Downs for next September can meet the sheep during the school’s upcoming Reception tours:
Friday 7th November at 2pm
Thursday 27th November at 2pm
Monday 1st December at 2pm
