Harlow MP Chris Vince welcomes government plans to review curriculum

ON Thursday, the government stated that children and young people will leave school fully equipped to thrive in the modern world of work under reforms to breathe new life into the national curriculum unveiled today claim the government.
Here is the response from Harlow MP Chris Vince.

“As a former secondary school teacher, I welcome the recent curriculum review. It has been ten years since the last review of this kind, and we all know how much the world, and in particular technology, has changed in that time.

The government are right to focus on ensuring that a reformed national curriculum has high standards for all children, but that it also equips young people with vital skills which will help them in work and life.
I also welcome their commitment to ensuring that we have a well-rounded and inclusive curriculum. During my teaching career, I was disappointed to see the previous government cut things like sport and music in schools, so only those who could afford additional lessons could benefit from these things.
However, we will also have a curriculum that will not shy away from recognising the importance of writing, reading and maths. Recognising this importance by embedding them across the whole curriculum, not teaching them in silos.
Finally, we all know that computing, media, and digital skills are becoming increasingly important in our lives, and I am pleased the new curriculum recognises this.
From a personal point of view, as a former Maths teacher, I am glad the review recognises that continuing to reinforce failure by forcing endless GCSE resits for students who just cannot achieve a grade 4 isn’t helpful and that alternative Maths and literacy qualifications should be looked at.
Above all, I am keen that any curriculum changes are made with teachers and by supporting teachers, particularly ensuring they have the right resources. When the GCSE curriculum was last changed, I can testify to this not being the case; children and teachers were let down.
“This curriculum will ensure our children and young people are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to achieve and thrive in a rapidly changing world”.
Was the MP for Harlow once a teacher? – That surprises me! – You’ll be telling me next that the PM is the son a toolmaker and former DPP.
This must be a record, as he managed to squeeze in he was a former teacher, then a former maths teacher, plus make reference to "during my teaching career" and finally make reference to his former teacher status with "I can testify to this not being the case". Anyhow, in between the "I was a teacher" nonsense Vince managed to say something sensible with: " I was disappointed to see the previous government cut things like sport and music in schools, so only those who could afford additional lessons could benefit from these things."
Good old Chris the ultimate yes man ,I hope he continues his proper career in 44 months time.
It is good he keeps up with curriculum, he will be back teaching after the next GE which is about all he has skills for.
Thank god my 2 youngest have almost finished school, the education system is a joke. I'd highly recommend people to homeschool there little ones nowadays.
I don't believe a word that comes out a Labour politicians mouth, re:- no rise in taxes. After 26th November budget , I will bet that brown noser Chris Vince will agree with it.
Oh there he is. He's been keeping his head low for the last few weeks. Question, who mentions it most? Starmers dad was a tool maker(obviously) or Vince with he was a teacher? Starter for 10. Moving on, let's see how he represents Harlow residents when Reeves breaks the Labour manifesto in the budget.
All sections of Art need to be brought back I to school s. This has been very badly neglected for years. Including working in clay, cooking, sowing, and lots more. This helps with wellbeing, it's not all about high tech, and numbers. A lot of kids are gifted but not being a loud to shine.. Years back ,I went to passmores and St marks to offer my time to show kids how to work in clay. I was told it's to messy. Unbelievable. A lot of people s gifts shine through there hands, sadly this has been lost.
