Armistice Day commemoration at Potter Street Memorial
News / Tue 11th Nov 2025 at 12:43pm

MEMBERS of the Potter Street community gathered at the War Memorial at the top of the green on London Road to remember those who gave their lives in all wars and conflicts.
The ceremony was led by Rev Alison Taylor from the Baptist Church.
A two minute silence was observed at 11am.
Thank you to all those in the Potter Street community who keep the memorial clean and tidy.
I don't wish to poo,poo what is a well crafted commemoration but I really don't think it's that respectful to A have the names of the fallen shouted out as if they where names on a class register or B to have the whole memorial festooned in Union jacks as if it was a stand at the world cup!, years ago the service was usually taken by the clergy at st Mary Magdalene and I can still remember the wonderful service we had for the centenary of the armistice in 2018. no flags, no shouting just a respectful service that began with "o god our help in ages past" and ended with the last post!.
May I thank the Reverend Alison Taylor for conducting today's service. I think it was well received by those that attended and indeed without the Reverend it would not, I suspect, have taken place. The comments above by Mr Dent on such an important day in our history was not appropriate in my opinion. I would ask Mr Dent if he attended the service? If he did not then he has no idea on the conditions that prevailed including traffic noise from buses, lorries and cars. If he did attend did he mention his views to the reverend?
My dad was never interested in these type of things, although he had the utmost respect for the men and woman who laid down their lives for their country. He once said to me."I want to forget the war son it ruined my life" my dad had a tough time in Burma fighting the japs and was given 0 help after it all by the then politicians who did bugger all to help blokes like my dad.
