Council housebuilding programme: New homes nearing completion for Harlow families

THE first new homes in Harlow Council’s ambitious council housebuilding programme are nearing completion and will shortly be ready for Harlow families on the Housing Needs Register to move into.
Developments in Staple Tye – including Perry Road, the former council depot, and Parnall Road – as well as at Woodleys near The Stow, are receiving their final finishing touches before becoming new homes for local residents.

These sites are part of the council’s programme to deliver more new council homes than in the past three decades combined, transforming long-derelict land into high-quality homes.
Construction is also progressing rapidly at other sites across Harlow, including The Yorkes, Arkwrights, Pytt Field, and Sherards House.
All new homes are being built to very high standards of quality, sustainability, and energy efficiency, helping to renew and strengthen communities across the town.
Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of the Council, said:
“We are not just talking about building new council homes, we are delivering more than in the past 30 years combined. Every single home completed will change the life of a Harlow family, and I am incredibly proud to see the new homes at Staple Tye and Woodleys nearing completion.
“These modern, high-quality homes are turning unused land into thriving communities and giving Harlow families the security, dignity, and opportunities they deserve. This is about more than construction; it is about delivering on our mission to ‘rebuild our town’ and ‘invest in our housing’ as we Build Harlow’s Future.”
Harlow families need decent homes in Harlow, and to not share housing stock with London's unrelenting overspill. But how, we must ask, is this Tory administration funding this 'Christmas-come-early' building frenzy? More debt financing? After all, Harlow Council's circa £300m of debt, debt that is wrapped around the necks of residents, didn't come from nowhere. All must look beyond the "all is well' boasts of a council that is stealthily picking your pockets.
I would like to ask Dan Swords, when will the council consider the needs of the disabled too? Not all disabled people are of pension age, and do not necessarily want to be mixed in with people of that age group. I have been waiting for six and a half years in an unadapted "temporary" bedsit, originally it was just my husband who was level 1/2 mobility, now I am disabled as well, possibly helped along by our housing situation. I am sick of hearing that our disability needs are quite specific, no they really aren't, and if they are, then why have we been put forward for properties that are totally inappropriate? Your policies have changed to Harlow homes for Harlow people, is that only if you are able bodied and have children, because that is how it feels. Dan Swords I have emailed you, the head of housing & our MP regarding our situation & have asked for a meeting to address our housing needs, hopefully i will hear from you before Christmas (i doubt it, but we live in hope).
If I were you Mrs Joseph I would also email all 3 councillors for your ward and if none of them are Labour, also the leader of the local opposition James Griggs. This is exactly the type of situation that the local Labour opposition should be holding the incumbent Tory council to task for!
Another disabled lady here I'm 58 years old and stuck in a private HMO room , upper floor . I was informed having disability and a low income doesn't meet criteria for social housing in Harlow . I will also be trying again through emails to local politicians to get suitable , affordable accommodation support .
