Senior Harlow Conservative describes budget as “true nightmare before Christmas”

COUNCILLOR Joel Charles has responded to the Chancellor’s Budget statement:
“Income tax thresholds frozen, savers to be penalised, a raid on pension contributions confirmed and an announcement to increase spending on welfare to appease the hard-left. The Chancellor is failing to show any form of competent leadership to steer the economy in the right direction.
“Today’s Budget statement was an attempt to disguise the fact that Labour’s central General Election manifesto commitment to not increase tax on working people has been abandoned. This broken promise is unforgivable.
“The Chancellor has outlined a misguided tinkering exercise with no clear plan to improve the economy. This Budget risks increasing unemployment further and does nothing to restore the confidence that businesses are seeking. A true nightmare before Christmas.”

David - Liz Truss was on the right path it is why she was removed in a coup, you cannot have a conservative PM actually lowering taxes and getting growth. That is not what the uniparty wants.

Cllr Charles I would be interested in your definition of "hard left" in political terms. For example are you a hard left politician if you support the removal of the two child benefit cap thus helping to remove child poverty? How many in your constituency are in child poverty: Do you know? Or how many are in food poverty? Making generalised political statements may be fun in tea rooms but it leads to other serious problems such as domestic abuse, and violence. I would suggest you ask your contacts in Essex police about this important issue rather than believing it will get you more votes.

You don't get growth by increasing taxes to pay for increased benefits,all this budget will do is increase unemployment and prices.

Brian you can get growth by increasing benefits. People on benefits spend money which creates jobs.
