Harlow Green Party leader not amused by chancellor’s budget

Politics / Thu 27th Nov 2025 at 08:25am

THE new leader of the Green Party in Harlow has given us her reflections on the chancellor’s budget.

Jennifer Steadman said: “It was oddly amusing that Rachel chose today to test out a new career as a stand-up comedian, aiming a joke at Zack Polanski.

“There’s plenty to criticise in the budget, but there are a few positives worth highlighting.

I’m genuinely pleased that the two-child benefit cap has finally been revoked. This will lift thousands of children out of poverty. This is one Labour U-turn that I’m very happy to see.

The rise in betting tax is interesting—though, unsurprising that horse-race betting has been quietly left out.

Increasing the national minimum wage for 16–17-year-olds, 18–20-year-olds, and for apprentice training is another welcome step. Hopefully it will encourage more young people to choose apprenticeships and learn a trade.

“But overall, this didn’t feel like a budget for people already struggling. The “ordinary people” Rachel suggests will have to pay “a little bit more” have already hit the financial brick wall. For them and for most there’s nothing left to give!”

Spending Other People's Money is the easiest thing in the world, especially if it can make you feel good as bonus.

Not sure that horse-racing was quietly left out when she literally said "I am making no change to the taxes on in-person gambling or on horse-racing… "

Jennifer is a lovely caring person, hence she welcomes the removal of the two-child benefit cap, raising the minimum wage for young people, doing more for apprenticeships and raising betting tax. Unfortunately, after listing all those good things I thought "what's not to like."

Green is not my colour, we all all been paying green levies on our energy bills for years and now Rachel the paperclip counter is reducing them but we still have Milliband with his lunacy, if its green it will cost you money.

Apprenticeships should most definitely be encouraged, so well done Rachel. Learning a trade and earning whilst you learn has got to be a better option for many youngsters. It encourages a work ethos and taking pride in doing a good job. Maybe the people who have never worked could be incentivised to do something similar!

I agree with the greens ,a terrible budget that drags people on low pay into tax ,will increase prices because of the rise in minimum wage as well as destroy jobs .Your all paying more tax to increase the benefits budget.

It will hopefully make Book makers taking their business abroad to avoid tax.
