Construction work begins in Market Square

CONSTRUCTION work began yesterday to transform Market Square and the surrounding buildings, including Market House, Adams House, and The Rows, as part of Harlow Council’s major town centre regeneration programme. The redevelopment will create a vibrant destination for leisure, hospitality, retail, and community activity.

Contractors are working to bring new life to this long-disused part of the town centre, introducing new bars, restaurants, nightlife, shops, high-quality homes, market stalls, and street trading spaces. With the programme to be completed by the summer, the area will be transformed with high-quality granite paved public spaces, landscaped green areas, CCTV, high-quality lighting columns, sustainable drainage, outdoor seating, and a striking water jet feature, creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors throughout the day, evening and night.
The transformation of Market Square, preserving and revitalising Harlow’s heritage, is just one part of the council’s comprehensive town centre regeneration, the largest programme of its kind undertaken by any district council in the UK. Other key schemes include the renewal of Broad Walk, the creation of a new transport interchange at the former bus station, the development of the Arts and Cultural Quarter at Playhouse Square, and the complete redevelopment of the Strawberry Star site.
Councillor Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Council, said:
“Market Square was once the beating heart of Harlow. This regeneration, now under way, is about completely transforming that area. A space that for too long has been neglected and avoided is being completely rebuilt into a lively town centre hub, active day and night, with places to meet, shop, eat, and enjoy a proper night out.
“Residents have been clear for years that they want better nightlife, real market space, and high-quality hospitality and leisure. This project is about delivering exactly that – and turning long-standing commitments into reality.
“This is not about plant pots or a lick of paint. It is the complete rebuilding of Market Square, under way now and finishing next year. By transforming Market House, Adams House and The Rows, and introducing new homes, shops, restaurants, offices, outdoor dining and high-quality public space, we are creating a town centre people can be proud of. Market Square will no longer be a forgotten corner of Harlow – it will be a place people choose to spend their time.
“This transformation is about pride, opportunity and the future of our town. We are attracting investment, supporting jobs, and rebuilding our town centre for the long term. We are delivering on our promises and Building Harlow’s Future.”
The project is supported by the Towns Fund and is on track for completion by summer 2026.
Residents have been calling for a regular week day market, Mr swords. Not ,now and again pop up 5 stalls. Have you secured shops. ? Have you considered the noise, for the tenants. ? Will all this be properly maintained.? Unlike the flower beds. Have you provided more car parking space.? For tenants.? I hope I'm mistaken by thinking, that All this just won't be a white elephant. I hope shops have been secured. Because at the moment hospitality is being hit really bad at the moment.( i know this) . whilst it all sounds grand, the reality at the moment is very different.
Which summer are we talking here for completion. You like to start things but the completion dates are very misleading. The road works ? Autumn 2025 , i dont think so. Start something then finish it. Too many building sites in so close an area. I will applaud when finished but im fearing that will be a very long time coming
The town centre is a retail area not residential. It should remain as retail only !! Give us back our market :)
Such doom and gloom from residents instead of just looking forward to the town centre being a nice place to visit again.
The people in the CGI do seem all to be incredibly white - That's not what I saw on my last walk through there to Nat West
Great all these new flats and shops but no where to park
Just to remind readers that it was only 5 years or so ago that the Council spent £270,000 (of our money) on resurfacing Market Square, fitting large canopies and installing those infamous table tennis tables. Before that of course it was the red flower pots and trees which cost thousands more. It will be interesting to see how things are in a years time, will any of the work being done increase footfall to this part of the Town Centre?
Nicholas, my mother would buy a cauliflower every week and never use it. It would just go black and slimy in the fridge and be thrown out when the next week’s shopping arrived. As a kid, I’d see a cauliflower in the supermarket and I’d see the black slimy thing in the fridge. I look at this and I see a black slimy thing.
All fur coat and no knickers or posh paving and no shops
Dan swords says the market square used to be the beating heart of harlow, how would he know he wasn't even born back then?
