A Christmas message from Cllr Joel Charles

AT this time of year, frantic preparations for the festive period take priority. The happiness and joy that December brings is also a moment to pause busy working lives, allowing more time with family and friends.

There have already been many well-organised community celebrations, a hallmark of what makes a traditional Christmas great in Harlow. These celebrations have allowed residents to share in the excitement of the festive period. It is the positive impact of shared experiences that help to strengthen community ties. Building a resilient community, united by a set of common values, is a cause everyone can get behind during the festive break:
“The spirit of Christmas, encouraging people to think about the importance of being kind to others, acts as a force of good.
“There are those who want to challenge the values that Christmas embodies, focusing instead on issues that aim to divide us. My message to them is simple. Harlow continues to be an open and welcoming community to all.
“Fairness and goodwill are underrated values that can encourage greater unity. Rebuilding trust is the starting point for reasserting the values that bind our community together. I recognise my responsibility as a local politician to support efforts to further unite our community, but trust must be earned first. Action and the delivery of promises mean more than words.
“Harlow has so much potential. Ambitious plans to regenerate the town are moving forward to position the district as a major centre for economic growth in Greater Essex. More residents today have a clearer sense of pride in Harlow. The priority now is to make sure everyone can look forward to future festive periods having benefitted from the change that is being driven locally.
“The individual contribution of every volunteer, charity worker, first responder and faith leader matters because they are the very people who can help break down barriers and confront those who would lead Harlow in a direction that might hamper future progress. They bring peace, calm and a sense of stability that cannot be manufactured. Harlow is fortunate to have genuine agents of compassion. I am inspired by their countless acts of kindness, driven by a strong moral compass.
“Faith has an important role to play at this time of year. Those who celebrate the birth of Christ will be comforted by the blessing and thanksgiving the festive season brings. I am grateful for the leadership shown by all our faith leaders who, through the courage of their religious convictions, champion the social justice agenda and make sure every voice is heard.
“A very Merry Christmas to everyone. Let hope, togetherness and bright optimism for the future guide us as we also look forward to the new year.”
Well said Cllr Charles, Merry Christmas yoyou too!
Muslims will be celebrating the arrival of Jesus into the world as an important prophet in Islam. As the Irish comedian Dave Allen used to say: "May your God go with you."
