Harlow Reform welcome government decision on local elections in May

Elections / Mon 16th Feb 2026 at 05:36pm

HARLOW Reform has welcomed the fact that local elections in Harlow will now take place in May.

A Harlow Reform spokesperson said: “We are delighted that the impending court proceedings brought by Reform UK have seen the Prime Minister of this cruel and authoritarian Labour government perform yet another U-turn.

This is a victory for the people of Harlow whose district vote in May had been taken away from them by the connivance of the Labour Government and Conservative Leader of the Council, Cllr Dan Swords. The Government, who sought to cancel elections on the grounds of the flagging Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), were forced into today’s climbdown by a combination of criticism by the Electoral Commission last month and Reform UK’s legal challenge.

It is also a victory over the Conservative-led district council that has used the LGR as a fig-leaf for taking away resident’s right to vote and, at the same time, saying that their ‘Rebuilding Harlow’ policy trumped the electorate’s right to vote. In other words, the Conservatives considered themselves too busy to allow things like elections.

The U-turn now forces that election upon an unwilling Council giving Harlow residents a real choice at last, between the more-of-the-same Con/Lab parties, the unhinged Green Party and Reform UK, which will put long-term Harlow residents front and centre in all considerations.

“We now relish the opportunity to take on the tired old parties in elections that would not have been allowed without Reform UK fighting for voters’ rights!”

Waste of Tax payers money in the current devolution processes being investigated by councils

@T Ruth Sayer, I'd like to think that the entire "super-council" plan will collapse. It was a plan created by power-crazed empire builders. It serves nobody but those at the top. It would make local decision-making even worse than it is currently.

Democracy and people's right to vote for their elected representatives will never be a waste of money. People fought for our right to vote, and only tinpot dictators take that right away! This is a victory for the people over the establishment.

Good luck reform but I don’t think they are right wing enough.

I absolutely agree with Mark Gough: democracy is paramount. Throw the dice and see where it lands, even if it means a Reform victory.

However, one source of disagreement and that is the Greens were described as unhinged. Having participated in a Green Party meeting in The Herald pub last November, I would say a more a more accurate word is unimaginative.

I remember a Harlow reform member suggesting a boxing club. This is a vicious and dangerous sport where people are punching the daylights out of each other. Great idea Reform. NOT.

@Ted, perhaps we should all do macrame instead? Some people thrive on the discipline of boxing. At amateur level headguards are worn. Yes, it smarts a bit if you're hit square in the face, but the discipline is in the learning not the "punching the daylights out of each other" as you so unimaginatively called it. Certain people join the armed forces, others are social workers. Which one is better in your eyes?

@Ted As a boxing coach in the local community I can't believe your ignorance. There are 4 boxing clubs in harlow run by coaches who work full time during day and boxing in the evening for free or little money. Providing a safe place for kids to train A gym becomes a second home for kids and coaches become father figures. We teach the kids discipline manners and to be respectful. Boys and girls all training together gives a family feel to the clubs with parents always happy to help out when needed. I feel that im speaking for every coach in England by asking u to apologise for your ignorant comment and take it down please

@Grant, well said. I think Ted is just desperate to prove his LieBore credentials. Typical of people that, even when they know they're wrong, refuse to change their view because they see it as weak. Sad really, but I'm confident you won't see an apology out of him. I'll apologise if I'm wrong but... 🤷🏻‍♂️
