Chelmsford Racecourse: preview and tips for Thursday’s seven-race card under the lights in Essex

Lifestyle / Wed 14th Jan 2026 at 01:00pm

THE latest all-weather meeting at Chelmsford takes place on Thursday night with a competitive seven-race card.

The action gets underway at 5.30pm with a maiden stakes over the mile trip in class five before coming to a close three hours later at 8.30pm as a field of 16 head to the stalls for the class four handicap over one mile and two furlongs.

Read below for a full rundown of the Chelmsford card courtesy of BOYLE Sports, who offer the very latest horse racing odds.

Up first at Chelmsford is a mile maiden stakes in class five (5.30). The promising Variety Type looks the way to go first up for the Sir Mark Prescott yard, a good second despite showing inexperience at this course on debut 50 days ago and improvement is expected. Gennadius can run him close in a race that outside of the top two, lacks a bit of depth.

Another contest over the mile trip marks race two of the evening (6.00), this time a class six handicap and of the 16-runner field, preference heads the way of Blue Eclipse, trained by James Tate. The four-year-old is a previous course winner but suffered a dip in form for his old trainer Alice Haynes, now picked up by Tate and a good fourth on yard debut, he could go a few spots better this time round back over a more suitable trip.

Kondratiev Wave gets the nod in race three (6.30) for the Tony Carroll yard, a beaten favourite here just four days ago but has been consistent in handicaps previously and should strip a lot better for his last run, while race four (7.00) can head to Lazzar for the Richard Hughes team, arriving at Essex on a hat-trick after two wins on the spin at Lingfield in his last two starts which is by far the best form on show of the 14 runners in this six furlong handicap.

Another field of 14 will take on race five, a class five handicap over the mile and five furlong distance (7.30). A competitive contest, this one could go to Must Believe, who has been in very good form for trainer Ismail Mohammed, a winner at Southwell in November and then a good second last time out at Wolverhampton. Veraison could be the one to push him closest for the win, another consistent all-weather performer with three wins to her name on this surface.

The penultimate race of the evening sees 12 runners head to the stalls for the classified stakes over five furlongs (8.00). Flicka’s Girl gets the nod in this one, fourth last time out at this track but was denied a clear run and finished strongly so that was eye-catching and could be enough to break through this time around.

Finally, the card comes to a close at 8.30 with a class four handicap over the mile and a quarter trip. Three-time course and distance winner Time Tested has to be a leading contender in the finale, up 2lb in the weights since his last win just 13 days ago at this course but has shown plenty of speed previously to shoulder that penalty. Maelek Alreeh, trained by David Simcock, rates the next best, a very good neck second to our selection over C&D just under a fortnight ago.

The racing at Wincanton will be shown live on Racing TV, where you can also find free bets for Cheltenham.
