Harlow Ladies 2s v 1 Upminster 4s
HARLOW struggled for players this week due to a lot of injuries with only nine players against Upminster’s 13. Even some of the Harlow players that did turn up were already carrying previous injuries.
The first half Harlow dominated the play which kept Upminster on their toes. Harlow had plenty of shots on goal, but due to the lack of players Harlow couldn’t find the back of the net.
Harlow got a break when link up play between Lucy Dearman and Sarah Alderson resulted in a rebound off of the Upminster goal keeper to be put in the back of the goal by captain Sarah Alderson. Harlow always kept the pressure and didn’t look like they were two players down at any point with strikes coming from Nina Johnson-Marshall, Samantha Care and Sarah-Jayne Donaghey but each unable to find the goal. Upminster started to get rattled with losing, which resulted in an Upminster player being green carded. Making the half time result being 1-0 to Harlow.
The second half Harlow still came at Upminster never giving up, but due to the lack of players found it hard to keep up with the pace of the game. Even with a tired team Claire Burgess and Nina Johnson-Marshall still found the energy to keep attacking the Upminster team. A short corner was given to Upminster which resulted in a Harlow injury as the Upminster striker took a shot at the goal, the ball was deflected off of a Harlow stick straight onto the head of another Harlow player Claire Burgess causing a stoppage in time as the injury was assessed. Upminster was then given a second short corner and with a straight strike from the top of the D found the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Making the score now 1-1.
Harlow broke a few times and tried to keep the pressure up but were starting to tire due to the lack of a full team, this allowed Upminster to come at Harlow full throttle. It was a messy battle in the Harlow D with Harlow defenders Olivia Figg and Nicole Donaghey stopping shot after shot from Upminster but due to all of the Upminster player’s pushing forward Harlow were unable to clear the ball effectively. Upminster was awarded a penalty flick against Harlow as a ball was fouled on the line. Keeper Sandra Figg managed to get a touch on it but it wasn’t enough to keep it out of the goal. Making the final score 2-1 to Upminster.
Player of the match went to a well deserved Nina Johnson-Marshall.
