Waggy tails aplenty at St Clare Winter Walkies

MUCKYclaredog1 pups and their welly-wearing owners squelched through the mud at St Clare Hospice’s first Winter Walkies of 2014.

The miserable weather could not put a dampener on Sunday’s event, which saw some 150 people and their canine companions brave the elements to enjoy a bracing 5km walk through the Hastingwood countryside.

There were plenty of muddy feet and paws as participants made their way round the rural route, with some of the smaller dogs having to be carried over the boggier patches!

St Clare fundraising manager Anna Baldwin said: “It was fantastic to see so many dog owners and their pets turn out for Winter Walkies. There were dogs of all shapes and sizes but all were incredibly well behaved and there were wagging tails all round.

“Winter Walkies is one of our most popular events and it was wonderful that once again it was so well supported by our dog loving supporters.”

Before the walkers set off, there were competitions for the wackiest wellies and the best dog/owner lookalike, which was won by two very hairy Komondors and their Jamaica-inspired owners. Prizes were handed out by East Herts District Council chairman Cllr Graham McAndrew.

There was also a raffle, with prizes including a hamper packed with doggy goodies, homemade cakes and jams on sale and a free soup and roll for every participant.

Every walker received a Winter Walkies medal and a free dog treat for their pooch, which were kindly donated by Jolleys pet superstore.

If you missed Sunday’s canine capers there is still time to register for this Sunday’s (Feb 16) Winter Walkies at GreenAcres Woodland Burials Park in North Weald.

Advance registration costs £10 for adults and £5 for children. Walkers can also sign up on the day. For more information, call events fundraiser Rebecca Barnett on 01279 773750, email [email protected] or see www.stclarehospice.org.uk.
